I am a U87 owner/driver. It's in battleship grey and have not been able to track down a U87 gold or i would've bought it by now. |
Plus this one is much more MANLEY!!! It even says so! Everyone that sees your big gold mic will know how MANLEY you are! (Grunt Grunt) |
LOL at Dave.
Banksey, if you can't find it then you haven't been looking that hard. Neumann makes a few each year and they made a ton of the U87AI just a little while back as anniversary models.
I think SoundPure still has one or two lying around.
I've also seen them on e-Bay anywhere from $3500 - $4500 (with a matching gold shockmount). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Willie,
If you haven't done your visit to Durham yet, I live just down the road in Charlotte and would be very willing to make the 2 hour drive up there to join you for your testing. _________________ Be well,

Thanks Bob.
Several area TV/Radio folks, including some CC techs, are interested in seeing the results of a head-to-head too. So it looks like it would be a worthwhile trip.
Soundpure isn't really set up to do the test physically (they said) but it would not be a problem to take a laptop portable rig and do it the way most of us would use them anyway.
Some of the Soundpure folks that may be involved in our little project are in Myrtle Beach this coming week for an interesting seminar. http://studioforums.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2136095781/m/9731000712 But I would assume it's for mostly studio pros recording music.
Think about the possible mic/preamp matchup we would be interested in testing. I would recommend shooting for different budget examples.
It may be after February before I can clear out serious time due to our new video startup projects. Let's put together what we want to find out and do it as soon as we are ready.
Thanks again,

Willie,
Excellent idea. I will do so, though I'm not the mic/preamp guru that you and many others on this board are.

After February will also be better with my schedule. Though I won't be available the last week of March, because of something going on in Las Vegas.
Once you have a better idea of when (what day and time) you'd like to do this, feel free to email me (bob@bobsouer.com) and we'll finalize details. There may be a few others here on the board (Donovan and Brian are both in the Raleigh/Durham area) who might light to join us as well. _________________ Be well,

Nothing fancy. |
It's what is in FRONT of the mic that is fancy. The rest of the equipment pales in comparison. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.
