Crazy question... I'm probably over thinking this one...
I landed a gig today (for radio - recording via ISDN on Friday) where I'm eating a bag of chips and the other person is kinda sniffing around, asking if he can try my chips. There's a lot of "crunching" specified in the script in my part... as I say "uh huh" several times throughout to answer his questions about the chips, while I munch away.
The client asked me if I would actually need to be eating chips or if those were sound effects the studio could add in. I responded they would be sound effects. But now I've been thinkin' about it, and I don't know... should I have a bag of chips and crunch away? Or just pretend my mouth is full and I answer "uh huh".
In the end, I crumple the bag. My guess is that would definitely be a sound effect. _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

Why is the client asking YOU?
Who is the director?
You're doing it via ISDN for whom?
If it were me, I'd have chips for real and a WHOLE LOT of water handy. In my experience, nothing but eating something sounds like eating something. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

For the sake of "audio authenticity" alone, I say go for the chips! Remember, calories don't count for food eaten while recording. Just be sure to keep some water nearby.
And here's hoping that you don't end up doing 68 takes...that'd be a LOT of chips. _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

The foley aspect of this spot should be recorded separately. You're going to need different recording levels. Whether foley is a service that you, a VO person, offers or not is up to you. I would have expected that whoever was doing the production on it would handle that.

IF you do end up eating (which I probably would try for fun) I would suggest having some carrots on hand. Oddly enough, many years ago I recorded somebody who was supposed to be eating potato chips. So they did. It just didn't sound right. Seems like the "crunch" didn't last long enough if I recall. So I ran up to the grocery store and grabbed other crunchy stuff. The carrots worked out best. Go figure. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

This is a job I got from voice123, so sometimes the client isn't as well versed with the technical aspects of things. Like I said, I told him it would be a question for the studio... which he already had booked when he spoke to me, and has the other talent (a celebrity of sorts... a baseball player for the Cleveland Indians).
Amy, I'm sorry, but what do you mean by "foley"? Is that aka "sound effect?" I've read a lot of your posts and you truly have an intricate understanding of the technical audio aspects, whereas I'm learning.

Thanks guys... I'll let him know we can try it with my eating. And thanks Brian... I'll get the carrots. Less salty too. _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

Here's what the Wikipedia has to say about FOLEY.

I wonder if there are any gigs out there that require you to eat German Chocolate cake during the read? I want THAT one! _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Well I haven't landed any gigs today that require me to eat anything or speak with my mouth full, but I should probably practice. The only question is, should I practice with Spicy Thai Kettle Chips, Drake's Yodels or a Violet Crumble candy bar? Each would likely have a different sound.

I suggest a demo session auditioning ALL those comestibles, Lou.
or several sessions just to be sure of the sound quality.
It's all research and tax-deductable.
(...but not automatically WAIST-deductable, I'm sorry to say. Nerts.) _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I'm practicing with a piece of crisp garlic toast, topped with a thin slice of fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, and tomato, drizzled in balsamic vinegar... just in case I land an Italian restaurant spot. In this business, you have to be versatile to be competitive.

I didn't even know there was such a thing as "waist-deductable". Ugh. _________________ Lou Zucaro
