Hey, everyone,

Do you use a different base rate schedule for government versus private industry? I believe it would mostly be non-broadcast, possibly some PSAs. Do you cut the Guv' a break?

Thanks for any input.

Government doesn't get a break.
They pay the same as The Very Big Corporations of America.

Usually, local gov'ts fiscal year starts in June. That means for certain projects that are large enough, budgets have to be approved and alocated. They are not usually bargain shopping. They just want to know the job will be done on time and within budget.
Other projects may have allocated funds from grants or other sources and they feel the need to spend all of it or lose it.
What I am telling you is--Don't cut the price--they ain't necessarilly looking for the lowest bidder.

I'm about to begin my second VO job for a military base. The thing that took me aback is that they pay me before I do the work. Talk about your good client stories! Smile

Last year around this time I was asked by a production company to be the voice of a training programme for a government dept. It was an urgent job so I would have to do it over the bank holiday weekend. I was going to be on my own that weekend but still preferred to be doing something other than work. Didn't really want to do it but gave the producer a price - the I don't want to do this price. Mike the producer knew I'd rather be doing something else. His reply via email to my quote read as follows.

Philip
They went for it, sorry

Mike

Jowillie, it's okay... some of us have to turn to the dark side.

Lower pay, worse benefits, uncaring management, and lack of training to meet compliance. My personal favorite is one contractor who had a leaked web-broadcast that was forcing people to take their vacation instead of just paying out for it, under the guise of caring about people's health and wanting to make sure that the vacation they were giving these guys was used. About two minutes later, the employees were told that they were "encouraged" (as it would be noted on their reviews) to work an extra 120+ hours per year without pay.

what's not to love about those guys?

Rolls Eyes

I'll take government clients over contractors any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
