|
|
Hi all!
(DB/Hart: Not sure if this should be in "Gear" or not...feel free to move it if you feel the need.)
How hard is it to set up a password protected client download folder on a website?
Is there some software I need to get to do this?
My site is built with Mozilla & is hosted @ GoDaddy.
Any info would be great!
Thanks!

a friend of mine asked his host the same question. his answer was not a problem at all. he just needed to know usernames and passwords. (he said he'd prefer to set it u .
but he did have questions about how much space was needed, how many times people would be uploading/downloading. guess he was concerned about server space and bandwidth.
for myself... in my control panel from my webhost, i can create ftp sub accounts myself with log-in names, passwords, and folders to access. i'd check with your host to see what you need to do. and to make sure you won't need to pay additional fees. depending on what you want to do you may need more space.
not sure if that answers your question, liz. _________________ Jim Feldman

Not hard at all... call go-daddy customer support and have them walk you through it. Seriously though, that's exactly what I did with 1and1 (my hosting company) and it only took a few steps. _________________ . If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal probably isn't for you. |

I also use 1and1 and it's super easy through the control panel. Chances are, your webhost has something similar. _________________ Jeff

Well...apparently it ain't so easy with GoDaddy.
Apparently the server I'm hosted on is a Windows server and in order to do it "easily" I'd have to convert everything over to Linux server...which means I'd have to do everying in Linux...which I have NEVER used before.
The only other way is to set up a page with "asp"....which they can't help me with....Googling "asp password protect code" has some tutorials I may use....eventually!
Oh well...I'll figure this out later...I'm doing a work around for now...
Thanks for all your thoughts!

Is Godaddy your web host? It's a good idea to have a separate domain location and web host. That way if my web host goes gown, I can go point my domain to another host to minimize down time.
With a usual host passowrd directories is done through CPanel with your web host. I use HostGator (main) and ASmallOrange (backup).
Let's say your client name is Bill. First, make a directory (folder) for Bill. Then in CPanel choose 'Password Protect Directories." Pick the 'Bill' directory and a password. Whe they go to the link "www.yourdomainname.com/bill/ they'll have to enter it to see the files.
I never worry about password protection becsause none of my clients could use any voice work I do for another client anyway. I do password uploads, however! |

GoDaddy's server setup doesn't allow for Web Users, so it's a bit of a pain, but you can toss folders into your webspace and have the directories show if you upload a .htaccess document that instructs Apache to display them. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I'm in the process of switching to Go Daddy (the Linux plan) and have already created a client ftp area.
And my websites were created in Front Page and I am told all I have to do is turn on the extensions and it will work fine.
I will wait until I return from DC before I do the switch just in case some gremlins creep in.
What is impressing me about Go Daddy so far is the tech support - I'll gladly pay for the call if I can talk to people as helpful as the ones I've talked to so far. Compare their cheerful, knowledgeable, quick to understand ways with my painful call last night with Dell (India). I was practically in tears by the time I was done. (Downloaded a Java update that crashed my computer.)
I have to admit, I was pleasantly suprised the first time I called Go Daddy tech support and realized I was speaking to someone in the States. _________________ Playing for a living...

I've been with GoDaddy for 2 years.
They host both of my websites and all my domains.
... and this is the FIRST time I've ever had an issue, so I don't have any complaints....
I think that I had new kid though because when I started asking her questions she had to check with an "advanced tech support" person...oh well we all have to learn sometime!
I'm sure it'll all work out for you Connie!
Have a safe trip....

I gotta put in a plug for my web host: ipowerweb. Everything is fast, and easy, and you can't beat the price. Anybody want to switch, check them out. _________________ "When I was your age, we had to dial to get online"

Liz,
I have a little script I've written in ASP (for Windows servers). It allows for a custom download area for each client. I'd be happy to help you install and configure it for your site.
Let me know. _________________ Dave "Christi" Felton

Dave!
I'm amazed that you can start a sentence with "I wrote a little script...." and be serious about your thinking it was just this little thing you threw together!
You code writers totally amaze me!
Right now I think I'm OK..after talking with DB & Bob (THANKS to BOTH of you!) I think I'm OK with the work-around I actually came up with (Yeah...I'm amazed myself!)
Thanks though! I may still take you up on it in the future!
Once again, the VO-BB community ROCKS!!!!!!!
