I thought this would be a decent deal for folks who have a computer and want to take the first step in recording at home without making a large investment.

http://www.bswusa.com/proditem.asp?item=MULTIMIX8FW-PKG

By no means is this an endoresment, but it seems to offer value if you're getting started and want to get a feel for recording. And by no means is this a complete studio system (good monitors are highly recommended along with some decent headphones). The equipment is made by reputable companies (Alesis and AKG).

I have a small set-up myself. Rather basic set-up, Pyramid PR-2700 mixer, a Shure PG 48 mic & Audacity software & it's worked out great! I do VO work weekly doing weekend previews & reviews for the University of Manitoba Bisons.
Not a bad little start, lol.

Nice stuff! Seems like a great deal. Of course, being the cheapest man alive...I did a little research. Smile

From Musicians Friend:
Behringer Mixer $39.90
MXL 990s $79.99
Cable $7.99
Stand $9.99
----------
$137.96 (free shipping)

And with the AKG Perception 100 $99.99
---------
$157.96 (free shipping)

Of course, I push the Studio Projects B1 to anyone looking for a great $100 mic. Mike (who loves mikes) from this board turned me on to them.

Elsewhere on this board, you mentioned that your main Mic is the Studio Projects C1. Would the B1 be an equivalent for thos of us on a tighter budget? It appears they list for $119 now though. You also mentioned the AKG Perception 100. How does that sound compared to the B1, C1 and MXL 990s??

Thanks in advance for any information you can share.

Do a little research into the workings of the mics you're interested in.

The Studio Projects C-1 has a profile that looks like this:

This shows a boost around the 12KHz range.

The Studio Projects B-1 has a greater presence at 10K.

.

A mic that works well for one person may not suit another, and it's not a matter of bucks. It differs between men and women, for starters. My favorite mic may make you sound like you're talking behind a carboard box. A fellow's fave mic may make me sound like I'm talking in a coffee cup.

AND as numerous people have said here and I will say again, the two greatest impacts on your sound are your MIC and your ROOM. They have to play nicely together.

In the item description on BSW it states...
Quote:
You’ll immediately sound great in all your recordings, podcasts or other studio applications.

Can they say that? I mean... I've never heard a blanket statement like that. I'm in no way knocking the equipment, but come on!

I've been using the Alesis MultiMix USB-8 for months, now. No installation software needed...it installs automatically, and works great. 100 pre-set effects...good solid sound... that seems like a good price!

For $299 it looks good. I keep trying to like Audicity but the interface seems clunky and it is geard to recording, not editing. But you can't beat the price.

In my opinion (which I have a great deal of respect for) the Audicity interface is even clunkier than SAW32, if possible.

In advertising I think almost anything can be said as long as there is at least a tiny bit of truth...even if they contort it to make it say what they want. E.G. "9 out of 10 Doctors said if they were stranded on an island they would prefer the pain reliever found in Bayer asprin" First off take a look at what is said....they didn't say Bayer asprin....they said the pain reliever in Bayer....which is asprin....also, they said 9 out of 10 Doctors....they didn't say MD's so for all we know they could have asked 7 PhD's in ant reproduction that question. However, my guess is they made the whole thing up anyway and no one was ever asked anything. It's a lot like speeding in your car....perfectly legal till you get caught.
(I know that was a tongue in cheek statement but I had to throw my nickel in....it used to be 2 cents but inflation affects everything)

Yes! This has always been true IF everything else is in place.

Damn, now, where'd that last screw go?....

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post on the board. I wanted to throw in that Apple's Soundtrack Pro has worked well for me for editing and mixing.
http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/soundtrackpro/

The cost was around $299 but not sure what it is now. You may have to purchase the entire Final Cut Studio to get it today.

Another alternative is simply "Soundtrack" (without the "Pro".) It comes with Final Cut Express HD and would provide the basics.
http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/soundtrack.html

I think you can even use GarageBand, which is "free" (after you buy a Mac.)
