PostPosted: Fri Jul 13, 2007 4:50 pm    Post subject: Japan packing and travel tips? Reply with quote

My 19-year-old son is traveling to Tokyo in just under two weeks. He'll be there for a month. He will be packing light to make it easier to get on and off trains. He might buy a used bike while he's there, if he can find a big enough one cheaply (he's 6'2".)

Does anyone have any advice on what he should definitely not forget to pack? Maiku? Anyone else?

TIA!

Tell him to study this closely. Wink I'd highly recommend a good pair of broken-in running/walking shoes.

And tell him to have a blast!! I can't wait to go back someday.

It all depends on why he's going to Tokyo. So..Why's he going?

I have three folks currently stationed in Tokyo here with me. If you tell me why he's going and what sort of things he likes, I can put together a killer trip. Ninja

ps. Prepare he to stand out!

Great! Thanks! He's a fan of Japanese culture and food (he eats with chopsticks a lot of the time), has been studying Japanese for about 2 years, and is a BIG-time anime fan.

He's a very straight-laced kid. Funny as hell, but no partying, clubbing, etc. He has some internet friends his age in the Tokyo area, so I know he'll visit them. Experiencing everyday Japanese life is a priority for him, although I expect he'll want to do some touristy stuff, too. He wants to see the city lights, the countryside, and the architecture.

He's a computer science major, gadget geek, and serves as a mentor to his high school robotics team, so I know he wants to see technology-related stuff, and his first order of business is to buy a digital camera to chronicle his adventures.

As an aside, this time last year, he was recovering significant injuries from a very scary car accident. He finished up 12th grade in a hospital bed in our livingroom and missed prom, grad night, etc. I have a feeling at least part of the idea for this trip can be attributed to having felt cooped up, and a desire to celebrate life in general.

OK! Here are the Kasbah travel tips:

Check out The Lonely Planet for Japan.
Prepare for expensive trips. The trains aren't cheap.

He should also check out Last Minute Travel for any special trips.

Lastly, the best advice that I have for him is to be polite.
Seriously polite. not American polite....SERIOUSLY polite. If he's been
studying like you say, he'll know. Japanese culture is so damn cool, but
you can't tread on it. Much richer than American culture.

I'm just going to type in those URLs again cuz they seem to be a bit problematic.

The Lonely Planet

and

Last Minute Travel

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I hate not being able to use "REAL" html. It is very confusing with this board code stuff. I try to look real cool and slick and end up posting a URL with 'url' it the url. I kill me!

Thanks for the fix.

Chris,

You can go back and edit your links to fix them, if you like. Just click the "edit" button to the upper right for that post.

... Yes, be very polite... but if he buys a drink for a girl in a bar, never let her see how much money he's carrying in his wallet.
