|
|
i'm predisposed to dubiousness about this, thinking i'm just supplying my cell # to would-be telemarketers.
anyone know anything about this? (and no, i've not done a search under 'urban legends' or anything)
what gets me is the "12 days from july 31st" as opposed to "august 12"
my sister, a usually reliable source, sent me this:
REMINDER....12 days from July 31st, all cell phone
numbers are being released to telemarketing
companies and you will start to receive sale calls.
YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS
To prevent this, call the following number from your
cell phone:
888-382-1222.
It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only
take a minute of your time. It blocks your
number for five (5) years. You must call from
the cell phone number you want to have blocked.
You cannot call from a different phone number.
HELP OTHERS BY PASSING THIS ON TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS.
It takes about 20 seconds. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

thanks, tom. i sent sis the link.
as usual, i had to set her straight,
even though she's the eldest.
edit: so the second eldest emailed me this (i don't know who she's talking to, frankly)--
Of course you'd get to the bottom of this - you are such a journalist. I bought
it hook, line and sinker.

LOVE Snopes.com!
I just got a memo from the General Manager today warning about a "BeautifulLife. s" virus. The memo went so far as to say
Stupid Memo From The GM wrote: | Snopes confirms this is NOT a hoax. Your data will all be erased if you open this attachment. |
I went to Snopes. HOAX! _________________ Dave "Christi" Felton

Another vote for Snopes. I can't tell how many times my father-in-law has sent me something, claiming that he trusts it because of who sent it to him, and a ten-second check on Snopes proves it's a hoax or misleading or whatever. And no matter how many times I've plugged that site to family who sometimes send those things, they still keep sending 'em.
For those REALLY rare times when Snopes.com doesn't have the info, a quick Google search for key words or phrases from the message will often do the trick. _________________ Justin S. Barrett
