Very nice Mary! Put a metallic, android-sounding filter on that and it doubles as a totally cool computer voice.

Joe - Do you drink caffeine/coffee? It can really tighten up the vocal chords. If you do, do it very early in the day. By noon the effects should wear off. By 3 you be ready to take on Philip.

Good advice, Dan-O. I have to confess I am back on the stuff and was drinking it around mid-morning which may have been affecting my ability to hit those lower tones, even though I don't start voicing stuff until usually after lunch....so now I am experimenting with having my coffee or green tea at around 7AM during my workout....it definitely gets me revved up for the Stairmaster!

As a rumbler who can reach lower registers than Lilleputian cashiers, I (seriously) suggest sporadic bear growls throughout the day. I can actually feel them thrumming in mid-chest, and it seems to maintain those early-morning thunder levels.
(It also frightens telemarketers and keeps the neighbours' cat away.)

I'm no doctor but I'm guessing some of that from smokers, especially heavier ones could be from the enhanced muscles in their upper chest. COPD'ers (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) makes your lungs very tough and gooey. This forces your muscles in your chest to get much stronger because it takes so much effort to get those masses of gooed up glop that used to be healthy lungs to expand. They can never get all the air out of their lungs for this same reason.
Look at someone who has smoked for many years. They have a barrel like chest.

No..Really...........
The old DJ's trick to lower register is to whisper as loud as you can.
(I am surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but, then no one may be as old a DJ.)
It was recommended long ago to regularly read copy in a loud whisper to "strengthen" vocal cords. Plus, you may find another character voice.

Just be aware that whispering is much harder on your vocal cords than regular voice talking so if you feel a strain - stop and rest the cords. All in all when trying to expand your register, either up or down, be careful and do it incrementally. Don't force it or you could cause permanent damage to the cords.

Pamela Lewis in her book "Talking Funny for Money: An Introduction to the Cartoon/Character/Looping" has an exercise for developing the lower register she calls the "Russian Bears" exercise where you say "Greetings from Soviet Union" like a Russian bear, going gently and progressively deeper and deeper till you hit the bottom of your range. Then you gargle with warm salt water and let your cords rest.

Stay up all night talking your head off, and plenty of Jack Daniels.

I'm making a list...

First, my normal voice returned today and it's been real tough to get gruff. Tried Kara's lemon juice idea and I'm surprised to say it actually worked to a degree (or perhaps to a key Smile. I'll have to keep a bottle around while I explore a more permanant solution of strengthing my vocal cords.

So, who does the best Russian bear?
