who am I?
what am I feeling?
who am I talking to?
how do I feel about them?
why is this important?
asking those questions with 100% commitment to what I am doing, coming in with a strong initiation, etc. That's my "method" _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I'm just going to repeat the above, but in my way, and that's that I immerse myself in my character, even if it's dry technical read and not some lunatic ordering pizza or whatever. I envision myself talking to a doctor describing the surgery step by step...how does he want to hear this? I envision myself talking to the slacker in his '89 Impala who really wants pepperoni grease all over his face right now, dude.
This thought process starts in the car on the way to the gig or as I review the copy for a session in my studio. Sometimes you only get a minute or two to explore the copy, but that can be a rush too, opening up your mind to all the possibilities in just seconds! I guess I should have done improv for a living.
When you're focused on making the listener happy or interested, and the client of course, and making your character true to the material, any other thoughts should drift away.

Great stuff, gang! I probably lean more toward Liz's and Moe's problem of going too fast. That's mostly a product of my environment because I know the furnace will kick in any second and send a low, steady hum through all the walls in my building...
I think I posed the original question because I'm getting to a point where I need to be able to shed the other 20 or so hours of the day (still have the day job and two kids) and just get into the mode that will let me get to a point where I can better focus on the projects or auditions at hand. I suspect it's a conditioning thing. So I was curious about any rituals or exercises that everyone else uses. Thanks for all the replies.
(btw, Moe... I know better than to work after watching a Red Sox game because I'm usually too upset to calm down enough to work... Especially this week...) _________________ Greg Littlefield

I tend to speak fast. I think it's the New Yorker in me and the Irishman in me. And I'm working on correcting that but someone gave me great advice to slow down. They told me to think about talking to a child. Basically, when you speak to a child, you talk slower when explaining something. It also gets me to smile.
