This is why no audio person should be using Vista yet.

I heartily second the AVOID VISTA mantra. I know every new computer you buy off the shelf includes Vista. If you purchase a new machine from a reputable dealer online, they will install Windows XP for you as an alternative, even if they don't list the choice on the website. Or, just get a used machine.
Or, buy a copy of Windows XP Home for $100. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

George,
Are you still building the VO2Go? That is a very interesting set-up.

Yes I am. I am working on VO2GO 2.0 now. I build them custom to order to meet the customer's needs. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

problem is, if you uninstall vista and install XP, might you trigger the deactivation? wouldn't the computer consider that a major change? i bought my computer the day vista came out thinking i'd get a great deal on a pc with xp. no such luck. and i was in dire need of a new computer to replace my 7 year old one. so i just went ahead. and to be honest (knock on wood) i haven't had any real major problems. _________________ Jim Feldman

This why after DHL lost my computer, I INSISTED that DELL send me the new one with XP installed and NOT Vista.
The DELL guy sounded surprised but said "Oh.....OK...."...and then proceeded to tell me that since I wanted an XP machine they were upgrading me from what they were originally going to send me to a better system! Go figure!

Jim,
No, for the simple reason that you will no longer have Vista on your machine at that point, and XP doesn't know that Vista was there before.
Of course, you will have to reinstall your computer software from the ground up and be SURE before you start that you have a complete back-up of everything you want to save, including email messages, documents, audio files, etc. _________________ Be well,

I'm not sure I'd worry too much about this to be honest.
I have 5 machines between home and office that have been running Vista since the beginning of this year. One of them, an HP from Best Buy (my wife's) has a video card with a flaky driver. For the most part, it's no big deal because she surfs the web more than anything else.
But there are a couple of little games she plays from time to time, and they don't run great with the current driver.
As a result, I've tried at least a dozen different driver versions.
I've also updated hardware drivers on ALL of these Vista machines at least 3 or 4 times, outside of the normal Microsoft Updates.
I've never heard a peep out of any of them re: activation.
Obviously this issue is real in the sense that SOME people are having trouble with it...but what kind of video card was he using? Where'd the get the drivers? How'd he do the driver swap? And what ISN'T he telling us?
The point is that most people get a PC, get it set up and then just use it. Sure, lots of people, like myself, are more of a "power user" but again, I've had no trouble with Vista at all...aside from a few older games that have misbehaved through no fault of Vista's.
Granted, for audio recording work, Vista is still not a great choice...but again, remember that this is NOT because of any Vista problem, but because of the sound hardware manufacturers being extremely lazy about creating stable & usable Vista drivers. _________________ Lou Zucaro
