I particularly like your 'I Love Me' jacket with the extra long wrap-around arms. _________________ www.davidmonteath.com

Cascade looks like a pretty nifty company.

Uh...I would REALLY like to hear from someone in the "Bidness" using a ribbon mic for voiceover work outside of narration or other long-form.
Although, they do look really cool in the studio...and that flat-rectangular Cascade can be had in black, brown and white from the original Chinese company.

I read their return policy... I'm impressed.
If you don't like a mic you can return it within 30 days for full refund, exchange or store credit. When I mention terms like this to my local equipment suppliers that just laugh at me. _________________ . If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal probably isn't for you. |

Ask Corey Burton (www.coreyburton.com). He loves using ribbon mics for pretty much anything he can use them for and even has quite an article on his site lamenting their lack of use. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

When you can find one, let me know.
The move to some of the cleaner mics was due to the noise imparted by the preamps. Now, people have become so used to near-sterile sounds that they almost expect it (I'm not talking clean, but like Howard Huges clean, which is not usually a good thing), especially for animation which is Corey's mainstay. For this reason, a lot of recording artists have been moving back to using tube and ribbon mics with the cleaner preamps (at least those who aren't using vintage gear) because these mics work so well with the newer preamps.
Me personally? I've got a few, but they don't work for my voice, so I stick with what I know works well for the type of read that I do (which would be Neumann U87, Horch RM2J, Neumann CMV-563/U47, EV RE-27; the U87 and RM2J are my mainstays, the others are backups). There are folks on here who regularaly use their RCA 77-DXs.
It's been a few years in coming, but I've been seeing a lot more tube mics and ribbons hanging around the studios where I do my VO over the past 24 months or so.
Ribbons aren't for everyone, but when you find a person who has the voice for one, it's pretty amazing. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

i absolutely LOVE my 77-DX. if my house were on fire i would grab it first. the kids can make it out on their own. i was also slow to make the analog to digital jump. i really prefer the sound of an analog recording. the absence of that "sterile" sound yoda talks about. imho, a recording can be too clean. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

I do love the "77D" sound. The Cascade Victor sounds interesting and for $169?
...and then there's "Shiny Box." |

Oh, so good to hear someone who loves the analog sound too, thank you Todd.
I still use my "Stevens" 24 track two inch tape recorder when recording some tunes... and I have the Nashville and Gollywood types coming here to the mountains of Utah to record on my little toys. Many of the Nashville boys and girls keep trying to buy one of my two "Stevens" and they are NOT for sale.
But, alas, it it now a digital world....

i still have my Otari MX5050 - have to admit, though, i haven't used it in a while. BUT, when armageddon comes and all digital recording is rendered useless i am prepared. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Wow! I thought I was a dinosaur. I still use FILM when I shoot pictures for Furniture Catalogs: http://www.tradewindtreasures.com/
And I too still have those scars on my fingers from cutting audio TAPE with razor blades when "editing."
You're killn me.
