Frank and Banksey,
Keep in mind that you two are in different positions in your careers. While I'm sure you spend quite a bit time marketing yourselves, I'm also sure that frequent work flows to you because of word of mouth and the considerable experience you've already had which have made you the connsummate professionals that you are.
Certainly something as silly as a Voicey is meaningless to you.
But try to remember the perspective of those of us who are struggling to make a go of this. There's nothing wrong with a bit of ego boost to keep morale up. This is just one of those tiny things that keeps newer people going and helps them realize that maybe, just maybe they are on the right track.
You've posted at least once, Phillip, about a client who loves you and thinks you're the greatest thing since sliced bread. Aside from the fact that Voices.com is not a paying client, how is this any different? _________________ Jeff

Hi folks,
Thank you for discussing the Voicey Awards.
We started the Voicey Awards with the primary purpose of honoring people in the voice over industry. David and I work sixteen hours a day each promoting voice acting and voice overs to bring more awareness to this industry and through those efforts, more opportunities for professional voice actors whether they be in the form of jobs or publicity.
To read that many feel that the Voicey Awards are solely a marketing tool to promote Voices.com hurts David and I more than I can say. If we weren't as passionate about what we do as we are or care about what you think, I wouldn't be in here replying to this thread.
That being said, I would like to respond to a few items that have been discussed here in the VO-BB.
To clarify, while nominees do need to be members of Voices.com, they don't have to be a paid member - Guests (free) are more than welcome to apply or be nominated. We consider everyone who is part of our service a member and we have never excluded anyone from participating in events such as these.
As many have experienced, we make an extra effort to receive, listen to and act on feedback presented to us.
When we were discussing the categories, it became apparent that there were some missing, including categories for child voice actors, teen voice actors, and also foreign voice actors (we had many people ask for that specific category after last year's show).
Within a half hour of receiving Jeffrey's comment to the Voicey Awards website, I made swift actions to revise the criteria to include nominations for voice actors over 30 years of age in the Best New Voice category.
There is a rhyme and reason for the changes and additions made for this year's event and it's all due to feedback and suggestions received over the past year on how to make the Voiceys better for everyone.
That's why there are the new categories as well as age brackets to give all voice artists an opportunity to shine, regardless of age.
I trust that by adding my comments to this thread, you'll understand how much we care for the industry and make an effort to communicate in a straightforward manner.
Best wishes,
Stephanie |

I see nothing wrong with requiring nominees to be members of Voices.com to win. The Academy Awards require winners to be in their respective guilds/unions/whatevers as well. _________________ Jeff

Hi Todd,
Thanks! I appreciate your comment greatly...
Jeffrey, thank you for your thoughts on the membership. The reason for nominees needing a member URL at the website is because it makes it easier for the judges (i.e. consistent navigation, layout, etc.) to visit and listen to demos in order to do their research.
I do hope that we'll see your nomination come in for Best New Voice!
Take care,
Stephanie |

I cannot speak for Phillip but for me - I am just like every one here and on Voices.com or Voice123 or Commercial Voices or ... well you know what I mean; I still struggle in finding clients, finding paying gigs, and getting an occasional ego boost or two.
I work hard at our business, I am sure Banksey does also. Recent accolades regarding some national VO work was really exciting, comments on my P.O.V. (Point Of View) on how to grow a VO business are really, really, really nice to hear or see written.
Each "award" is a good thing to any one of us who achieve the status. I am not against any type of accolades. A VOICEY can work wonders for one's self esteem. I would be proud to own a VOICEY designation, alas, I cannot be in the running as I do not fit the criteria.
I submit that our own D.B. Cooper is one who deserves more than just an award, but life-long devotion for her part in presenting the personal side of our business and the (Oh, I hate this term) "social networking" with the VO-BB.
Accept that some may win a VOICEY and some may not. Accept that you have taken the challenge to do something with your talent and skills which many are not willing or able. Do this my friend, and YOU are a much larger winner than anyone who wins an award.
I am humbled by the skills and talent presented on the VO-BB and other sites. The camaraderie, the relationships, the esprit de corps are what make you all winners in my book.
