|
|
Just curious to know your opinions on using a "stage" name for VO work just like many actors/actresses and radio personalities do.
Ultimately, it's talent, reputation, contacts, and demos that often attribute to VO success, however, I don't feel a "stage" VO name is a bad idea.
The general populus appears to have trouble pronoucing (let alone remembering!) names over 3 syllables long... |

In the UK we have voices called Big Al and Red Pepper. Philip Banks works for me so try changing your name to that, another stage name like Wells Fargo may do well. |

Spacegypsy! That's my songwriting/singing/woo-hoo energy practices name.
Don't think it would work for VO though.
My VO name is my married name, as I like it better than my maiden name. |

I keep trying to have the name of God stick, but I haven't been successful as of yet!
Personally, I see no benefit to having a stage name. I want everyone and anyone to know who I am and how they can contact me. I would certainly prefer to not have people know my personal phone number etc... but if someone wants to get a hold of me bad enough, and for some odd reason they can't find my business number, I'm in the phone book... There will however be a service charge of 15% for an after-hours call!
Hello, I'm Brian Forrester, you can call me, God, Allah, Buddha (the belly might make this one most appropriate), Sir, Master My Lordship, or the old safe standard of Brian or Bri will do!

I used an "air name" for about 6 months back in 1989 at a rock station I worked for. I hated the air name and was most uncomfortable using it. I have always used my real name on the air as that's who I am. I don't pretend to be someone I'm not while on the air. What you hear is what you get...all 100% ME! Take it or leave it. I live in a small town and everyone knows everyone 'round here so it would make no difference. |

I've wrestled with this myself...Johnson is such a common name (3rd most common in the US), the full name has no music to it and it doesnt stand out. I sorta like using my initials PJ as a "first" name, I was thinking using the middle name as a last...PJ Edwards? Does that sound pro/catchy? It's got a rythm at least...
I didn't know Cooper wasn't your real last name, DB...I just thought you were amazingly lucky to end up with such a cool name. Good choice.

PJ, If you're still trying to figure out a name for yourself you can always try the "Porn Name Game." Supposedly used by "the industry" to come up with stage names for up-coming stars. There's two ways of doing this:
1. Your middle name + the name of the first street where you lived. (Mine name would be Joseph Magnolia)
2. The name of your first pet and the first street, again. (Tiger Magnolia)
I once had a in radio who did this to a newbie and he kept it! So if you ever hear of a Kevin St. Clair, you know where he got it. |

Following that logic my porn/stage name would be....Glenn 2nd Avenue
I heard a different variation first pet and street name
That would make me Dusty 2nd avenue (kinda like that)
But back to the topic on hand Bud is not my real name but I have had it since I was born as a nickname
Bud Been (pronounced B-E-A-N) has a better ring than Harold Been
Damn!!!...now everybody knows my deep dark secret
