I've been at this for a few years now and everything I read starting out said it takes a few years (at least) to get established. Now that I'm finally seeing some of the seeds I sowed early on start to take root it's interesting to look back on just how impatient I was to get going and how impatient I can still be at times.
Talking to folks fresh into the industry reminds me of how long it takes... how persistent you have to be... how much you have to want it and just how much blood sweat and tears you've got to put into your biz to get it off the ground. (Have I used enough cliches yet?)
I guess my point is... patience & persistence pay off in the long run. But it can be an agonizing wait, no? Wink
Just wanted to thank not only DB for hosting this great community but all the great & helpful folks that make it just that.

Patience, and persistence for sure.
Some of the agony is from our brethren and sistern here kicking our asses.

Glad you came to the party and stayed, Tom.

I still agonize over the feast or famine aspect of our biz.

I had a VO gig today where a lady was doing her first character VO on the same project. Waiting to start, she mentioned her frustration at how slow things have been the last 2 months. I explained that everyone of us has ebbs and flows with the work...you just have to enjoy the up times and use the down times to better your craft.

Thanks for the words of inspiration Tom!

You've got seeds taking root? I never tried the Burpee marketing technique.
That must be why I'm getting weeds!

Thanks, Tom...for the inspiring words.

and a friend of mine who started her business (entirely different than ours) advised me long ago to always be positive and never to show your cards if things are tough or if you just want to vent.

not pretty.

and, a positive attitude results in positive things. universal vibes, i think.

Great post, Tom.

I was in radio for 10 years. It wasn't until around year 5 that I started working for what I considered to be "good" stations, that is, stations that my friends and acquaintances were actually familiar with.

As a realtor, it was about 5 years before I was making pretty good money.

I'm thinking that 5 years is a pretty realistic time frame, although there are never any guarantees, and sometimes things happen sooner.

The great speaker Patricia Fripp http://www.fripp.com/meetingplanners.html

says "overnight success usually takes about 15 years"

I think just about everyone that makes the decision to get into 'the biz' have all had those pains.

You always believe that you are 'good enough' to be one of those that won't take so long to make an impression. You hear all those stories and say to yourself, "Yeah, you maybe, but not me. I have experience in blah and blah, oh I've also done a lot of blah work, so I'm ready to start counting those sacks of money right now!"

Then it starts to set in. Wow, it DOES take time, effort, persistence. If you are one of those that can really recognize that and still have the drive to continue on, then you have passed that first test. Many more to come.
