One thing to check, be sure your 1/4" cables are TRS - Tip Ring Sleeve.

You are too kind!

But it makes me feel more serene about leaving my insane mic chain as it is.

Here is where I am confused.

On my preamp/processor, I have a choice of two balanced analog outputs: XLR and TRS. It would be nice to go from there to a balanced input on the mixer.

In my mixer, I have three options for inputs. One is the mic XLR (which is balanced of course), then there is the 1/4" line input, in the center of the XLR (which is also balanced), and finally an unbalanced effects insert.

The manual recommends the Line Input for keyboards, drum machines, tape machines, etc. These seem to be line level devices which require some preamplification. The manual recommends the Insert point for compressors, limiters, special EQ and such. These seem to be things which affect the signal but do not require any amplification of their own.

So... if am I am understanding this correctly, the only way around the mixer's preamp is through the Insert point. Right?

I know that I would be losing balanced connections if I use the insert point but is this an otherwise stupid thing to do? Or is it the only thing to do?

Thanks,
Nick

It's a Soundcraft Compact 4... [advertisment] If I haven't said is a dozen times already, I highly recommend Soundcraft, over a Behringer. The Soundcraft has a warmer sound, it's built better and it's purdier too. At only $99, I would choose it over a Behringer UB802 any day.

I would just try it both ways and see what ya get. I'd go into line one and keep the gain down as low as possible on the board and use the pre to drive your gain. Then try it on the insert and see if there's a difference in sound. Let me know if there's a difference, I'm curious myself.

Thanks,
