Thanks Bob.

And, if I'm gonna spend money, I'd rather spend it at White House Black Market.

Ugh. Off to go shopping at Guitar Center.

If you're going through a mixer, and you HAVE to keep one in your chain. Go look at an Allen & Heath as well as the Mackie.

I've got a 1220 Onyx (Mackie) which I use on the side, but if I had to track directly through the mixer, I'd have gone A&H instead. Knowing now what I didn't know then, it would have saved me a ton of time modding the Onyx.

A&H has a ZED 14 board out now?? Looks to be a good board and it has USB 2.0 input and output if you ever need it.

The Mackie Onyx are nice boards also from what I have heard from those that have them. The Firewire card does not come included. Just know that going in. That is another few hundred.

Thanks for the tip. I bought a Mackie 802-VLZ3. And guess what?

It works - no snap, crackle, pop or static. So, it must've been the board.

And, b/c I spent the $20 on the extended warranty on the Behringer when I bought it, I'm getting a check back for the money spent on that.

All in all, a good ending.

Ok, the snap, crackle, pop and static is back. Put my call into Symetrix and am awaiting the gentleman's return from lunch.

What a roller coaster ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay Okay...tell us more about your MKH-416 (I feel like a gear psychologist).

Do you have the foam cover on the mic? Is it used?

Record some of your room noise with you out of the room.

Is it snap, crackle, or pop mostly? Smile

I'm lying on the couch, Dr. Blair. I'm gonna need to be on a therapist's couch soon. This kind of crap drives me insane.

I appreciate your help in advance. Symetrix hasn't called back... my guess is I won't hear from them till tomorrow.

Yes, I have the foam windscreen on the mic. I keep in on there.

The snap/crackle/pop/static has now subsided for almost an hour now. I've done absolutely nothing to cause it to subside. Like I said, it comes and goes. As soon as it comes again, I'll record and you can hear.

Here's a recording of it earlier. It's the same thing, but sometimes it gets louder, then goes away. And sometimes there's static with the popping.

Caryn_SoundTest_32508.wav (1.9 MB bytes) => http://www.onlinefilefolder.com/index.php?action=getshare&type=0&user_num=35678&share_id=200128&hash=b010a1bc585255aaee36e1ee04e63c5c

Oh, and PS: the last time it was happening about an hour ago, I plugged my headphones into the MBox directly... could still hear the noise. I completely unplugged my headphones, and could still see the noise happening on levels on the board and the Symetrix.... in case that helps.

If it ain't the Symetrix, it must be the cables, heh?

Not necessarily. It could be the Mbox interface, the cables (most likely), Electric interference from another device or devices, or an issue with the circuitry in the mic itself (pretty rare).

I'd start working on the cables next.

Okay...deep breaths...

So it's not the windscreen foam. Sometimes if the foam doesn't fit right it can make a little crackle noise as it rubs against the grates on the MKH 416 (or any shotgun mic for that matter).

One wonderful thing about the MKH series of shotguns is that they are largely resistant to being affected by humid conditions. However, I have had MKH mics cut out on me during seriously humid summer conditions working outdoors when I was in Boston. They sounded exactly like your sound file: crackles just like that but with no signal between the crackles. I'm not suggesting that your soundbooth is a geranium, but I would hold the microphone as a suspect for further questioning.

To me, cabling and preamp crackles usually come with hiss or hum: this is just flat out signal breakup as if something was wrong with the diaphragm or the circuitry.

Gah...good luck Caryn!

Thanks Dr. Blair!!!! I'll check into it. I have a friend who also has the 416 and she does have that cutting out issue from time to time.

I appreciate your thoughts!!!!!!!!!

The Sennheiser folks are REALLY nice.

I explained the situation to them, and they think that it sounds like the mic. I'm shipping it back today.

BTW, my Behringer board is for sale on eBay if anyone wants it.... now that I'm fairly certain the board wasn't the culprit.

Hmm...

I was just looking at picking up the Behringer Xenyx-502 just to put a good phone patch in my equipment chain w/o it being a part of the main mic chain. Now you tempt me Caryn!
