Just wanted to say "Hi".
New to the board and interested in breaking into the VO field. I have been doing radio for many years and have a few friends doing well in VO. I am in the process if setting up my home studio...Shure SM7...no interface just yet, the board I had went kaput...using cool edit pro with a standard sound card.
Anyway...I have done some gratis work and of course radio stuff... please listen and let me know if there is hope for a guy with my voice...

Hi Kasey,
First off, welcome. Secondly - if you are really, honestly serious about pursuing voice over as a profession, and not just a quick and easy way to make sacks of cash ....take an acting class.
Radio fosters numerous bad habits for VO. You need to rid yourself of the "happy veneer" over all your reads. No, I'm not being mean...That's advice my first voice coach gave me ... right before he said he didn't think I could do VO full time. Heh. His words hit the mark. I worked hard, studied the craft of voice over and dusted off my acting chops. I've been doing voice work full time for four years now...and no, it didn't happen over night.
Best of luck. Search our archives here, there's gold in them thar threads. _________________ Moe Egan

Thanks Moe...your suggestions ring so true...I have heard that a few times now about the bad radio habits and the acting classes. It is interesting that most people...esp. people in radio...think that VO is just rip and read. I have found that it is so much harder to sound "natural" than most people think.
My kids are a big inspiration for all of this as I would love to work from home just to see them grow up...dont want to miss a thing...to take a phrase from aerosmith...once I acquire a mic interface, I will post a recording from my home setup to see how it sounds and what people think of it...I hope I have the pipes for this line of work, they have served me well for radio... |

Wow... Kasey K. finally joined us
Hey welcome to the board! You'll find a wealth of knowledge in here. I have to agree with Moe on her comments. I for one should know... been in radio for over 30 years now and VO is a totally different business than radio. Best of luck developing that golden edge to your voice, and if we can help you in any way, just ask!

Thanks for the warm welcome and the hint of anticipation...?... not sure what to make of it unless I know you or you know me...hahaha...if I owe you money...i'm not the one you know...lol
Just looking over some posts and in search of a good mic interface to finish my home studio...any suggestions on what will go good with a Shure SM7 would help.
(and of course any voice tips are greatly appreciated) |

Welcome Kasey!!! I agree with what has been said so far. My years of acting experience are serving me well in VO work.
I agree it's not easy sounding natural.

Definitely the...

And radio imaging sounds natural. But a few commercial clips, minus the DJ voice, would be nice. Not that there's anything wrong with a DJ voice. It does pay the bills, but most of the commercial demos that I've heard from those on this board seem more... personal? I hope that's not too confusing.
Do check out the archives... more ideas and nuggets than you can shake a stick at. And one more thing... never ask for gentle. Always ask for honesty.
Welcome aboard. Enjoy.

Kasey,
Welcome to the board. But, forget the "pipes" thing. That's a meaningless idea in the world of voiceover. It's about telling the story for the client, never about how you sound. _________________ Be well,
