Possible threadjack here but did anybody else find the VO for Rodney's promo video somewhat...lacking? I thought I even heard either a mispronunciation or a slight stumble.
Based on the quality of the production, I'll sight bad directing as the cause for the less the stellar VO performance.
Diane what you ought to do is tell him you'll re-do the VO for him. _________________ - Peter

At the risk of being horrifically misinterpreted ( as I was on another board, in another time and place...)
I will contribute the following:
The "standard" release makes perfect sense given the most "standard" of usages. In other words, if any audio/video from the event were to be edited into snippets to be used to review or promote the event - on a website, sent to the media, etc. that makes sense. Those short clips are provided gratis. Its promotional and educational - for this and future events.
If, however, the audio/video is to be collated, packaged and sold for profit (Did you miss VOICE 2008? - well now you can get all the wisdom of every workshop for only $**.99!! Were you there but you're just dying to relive the magic in the comfort of your own home?? Yours for the discounted "attendee" price of $**.99!)
In this latter case, there is a disingenuous approach, on the part of the organizers, that is potentially, perhaps unintentionally "revealed" by that last statement.
As far as Kara's suggestion that one simply refrain from working at the mic (if given the opportunity, by raffle or otherwise) - I think that diminishes the healthy investment on the part of the attendee. We all know that while we certainly can learn much through observation, application has more immediate impact. A full-price attendee, if given the opportunity to work at the mic, oughtn't feel wary of doing so, for any reason.
Finally - and to be eminently clear -
I think the potential for VOICE 2008 is wonderful. Certainly for anyone who decides to attend and maximize the benefit of so many workshops in such a concentrated environment. For anyone who looks to experience a sense of community in a profession that can feel intensely isolating. (Anyone ever imagine they could take off through the ceiling in their booth, like the elevator at the end of the 1971 Willy Wonka?) For anyone who decides to attend, VOICE 2008 holds much promise to be a rewarding investment, professionally and, perhaps, personally as well.
However, the potential benefits of attendance do not cancel outright the healthy skepticism that some professionals hold as to the motives behind the event, the structure of the event itself, and the ultimate character of the event, in usage and benefit to the organizers.
Within this thread, a question has been raised.
It has been raised elsewhere, too.
To my mind, that is perfectly healthy and entirely reasonable.
To blithely accept every promotion at face value is certainly not good business, particularly in our sales-driven-culture and I applaud those who simply raise the issue - even if the alarm turns out be benign.
It is neither negative, nor cynical.
It is reasonable.
Here's to a marvelous conference for all those who choose to attend!
Here's to a marvelous summer and continued great success for those who do not!
In the greatest democratic sense of inquiry and balance-

Sorry... just a reflex.
Welcome to the home of cooler (tho sometimes warped) heads, Peter. When I look at expenses like this, I'm basically looking at two things: Self-improvement and networking. Everything else is somewhat irrelevant to me at this stage. If the probability of both is high at any given event, then I give it serious consideration.
My reason for not planning on being at VOICE at this moment is financial. If that happens to change over the summer, I would absolutely consider going. _________________ Greg Littlefield

Smaller minds always fear adversity. Do not be afraid of opposition; remember, a kite rises against the wind.

Peter, great post. I think all too often when someone questions something, it is met with anger and distrust, 'how dare you question...". People no longer debate anymore, instead they bully others into submission or silence. _________________ Pam Tierney

Peter,
I witnessed most of what went on "elsewhere" for a few days there. Whew!
There were some long-winded posts, and plenty of misunderstandings all around.
"I want you to hear what I'm saying, but I really don't want to listen to what YOU'RE saying!"
In all the obfuscation and positioning I honestly lost interest, and lost the point of the debate.
With the advantage of hindsight, I come away with the feeling that all sides brought up important considerations...but never the twain shall meet.
Kinda like MAC vs. PC.
You're an excellent writer and thinker. We're blessed by your presence here.

Hi Peter,
Some of the negativity thrown around on various threads in general on various boards just suck the energy right out of me. I know, I know. there ARE no other boards. Welcome to a professional's board that, even with some interesting discourse- hangs and sticks together. _________________ Bobbin Beam
