Congrats to Mary and Moe! Woot!
Nice on the southern accent Philip!
Yeah...I need a new voice for my home answering machine too. I accidentally erased the one I did awhile back and it's back to the default robot voice.

One of the most warm, relaxing and welcoming accents on the planet, although probably not the way I butcher it |

Wow, cool! Many thanks - and I'm very proud to share the honor with a dear friend whose talent I admire tremendously.
It was fun to listen to [many of] the entries. Lance and Chrissy both made me laff and laff and laff.
Thank-you Philip |

Kudos to M & M, and thanks to Philip for the exercise. Makes for a reference from which I can work to (hopefully) improve the RP accent. _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

Congrats M&M! I still hope to take a crack at it before the weekend is over, if only to see where my Brit accent sits on the scale. _________________ Justin S. Barrett

Way cool! Thanks Banksey! This was a lot of fun! This gives me permission to be a tad more spiney when using (or choosing to use) accents.....I've been very intimidated about using accents in my work so far.
One question Sir Banks....you mentioned | Quote: | | Mary had the voice and Moe had the sound. | Being a bear of little brain, could you explain for me what that means exactly? I'm not sure how voice and sound are different.
And....

Voice n Sound.
In the context of my remarks voice is defined as what people hear and that's the place to start when dealing with challenges of learning an accent. The sound is where we as voice over people need to be as it's the sound that engages. Our audience hears the voice and accepts or rejects it but they listen to, are engaged by, pay attention to the sound.
I can name at least 3 voices who all have very similar voices to mine. Why did the casting direct pick Philip in favour of A or B? Wasn't the voice as they're the same, it was something in the sound that SUCKED THEM INTO MY TORTURED WORLD - If they attempt to escape they will be shot! |

Congrats Mary and Moe! You deserve it!
Philip, interesting that you call it your tortured world... another VO friend of mine calls it the "padded room." _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

Congratulations Mary and Moe!
Here in Southern California, dialects that aren't your own are not something you're usually hired for - there's always a desperate actor close-by who's a native speaker of whatever language or dialect you need.
Years ago, one of my regular clients was working for an English company. He needed a narration I had previously done, only this time with an English accent. I said I would give it a shot, and to my surprise he said it sounded "perfect"...
...A few days later he called me and said the English client played the piece - the response was "We couldn't stop laughing!!!" They then hired an actual British guy and now I list my dialect as "PHONY British accent."
Thanks again Philip! Your "Challenges" are great fun! _________________ Travis

Acoustics are counter-intuitive. If one thing is certain about acoustics, it is that if anything seems obvious it is probably wrong. |

We grew up with a British neighbor when I was a kid; I thought she was the poshest sounding person I'd ever met. As I got older and had traveled a bit through England, I managed to "place" her by her accent -- she had lived most of her childhood and early adult life in London; born in Greenwich. Us kids grew up "playing English lords and ladies" in her yard. She's long gone to her reward now, but I will never forget her gentle and sweet voice as she would welcome us into her home -- a bunch of neighborhood ragamuffins in Boulder, Colorado.
My publisher is Cambridge University Press, and the fellow who used to handle my books had grown up and gone to school in the Cambridge area. He is a great lover of all things southern, too, and his Texas accent (attempt) had us rolling on the floor.
Anyway, Philip's challenge sort of took me back to those days when Mrs. H would bring us into her house for a small snack and she'd tell us about her life in England before she married and came to the U.S. I had fun doing the voice, even if I did screw the pooch with it... the point was that it brought back some fond childhood memories that I hadn't thought about for ages... _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |
