I have neighbors dogs, hot rods passing through and the flight path of a local air base. It's not really bad at all. I can usually stop for a second and get right back to work.

Recently, I had a friend at a local bank ask if they could use my studio to record a "celebrity" type voiceover for radio. I did it as a favor, paid the National Guard to come in to clean the place and off we went. It was a Wednesday, my garbage pickup day. When they come down the street "collecting" it sounds like the "Blue Man Group." For some reason, they came early in the morning and I was spared.

When the entourage arrived (star, star's handler, agency person and bank rep) I opened the front door and asked, "Was the recording session today?"

I feel your pain on the noise thing.

Bill, you are so funny.

My grandmother always made it a point to be relaxing with a book when company arrived, no matter how much work it was to get ready for them, so they wouldn't be tempted to think they had inconvenienced her.

Ben, the thing with your neighbor's mower made me laugh!

Luckily, we have a street commando-type woman, who basically has her nose in everyone's business (except ours... I don't talk to her b/c I find her repulsive). However, one good thing she does is she influences most of the neighbors to have the same yard caretakers... so most of my street is mowed and trimmed on Monday morning. There are a couple that don't partake in her soiree (we're one of them), but basically, I have a schedule of when the lawn guys come, and those are "booked out" times.

And, oh, the woodpeckers!!! My dogs even know their squawk and start barking when they hear it. We have this styrofoam decorative molding around our house thats covered in some sort of coating, but it's not hard enough to keep the woodpeckers away. They've drilled holes in various spots. My husband has climbed up (2nd story) and tried to fix it, but it looks like hell, so we're eventually going to have to hire someone to fix/replace it, and I'm sure it'll cost big bucks.

Our solution to scare the woodpeckers away? A beebee gun. Sorry MCM. We don't try to kill them... just scare them off. They're very stubborn little birds, and they will sit there and taunt/squawk if I just say "shoo!"

I had woodpecker issues until two things happened.

1) due to age of trees, all were removed from immediate vicinity of house

2) hawks decided to nest in the area. Don't know if they scared the buggers away, or just ate them.

in what seems to be a division of labor planned by absolute lunatics, we've had portions of our street dug up, filled in, re-paved and dug up again at various times over the past two months while new water mains are installed.

evidently each task requires a different company but each time it seems the same backhoes, scrapers, rollers, and other noisemakers show up.

thank the lord (and my friend the builder) for my mic booth. with only a few minor rumbles, it manages to negate the effects of all this mess...plus some of the severe thunderstorms we've had, lawn crews, cats wanting attention, phones, traffic, kids playing, and dogs howling at passing sirens.

the most astonishing thing it did let through was a tiny bird in the next yard, whose otherwise delightful singing had just the right high frequency that even the engineer at the remote ISDN location could make it out clearly.

My woodpecker issues really came to a head when they failed to tell the difference between a wooden tree and aluminum siding. Wow!

Medical helicopters flying fast and low (I have 3 hospitals due South of me).

A neighbor two doors down who's been doing a major remodel for over a year. Most days nothing. Other days it's a re-creation of the battle for Iwo Jima.
