I have a question about the shock mount for the MXL 990.
When I attached the mount to the boom stand... no problem. When I tightened the "thumbscrew" on the Shock mount... it stripped. And it didn't seem that I was over tightening at all. I'm thinking that this connector is aluminum. Is this a common part that can be bought in steel? I went to the Guitar Outlet... they didn't carry it separately.

I don't have an answer for you, but I just bought one of those mics, so thank you for the heads up. |

If it is just the screw that is stripped, but can be removed from the attachment, I suggest that you try to identify the thread count and pitch. Home Depot or a good hardware store can probably help you - they have gauges for that kind of thing - if the threads are not destroyed beyond the point where they can be identified.
You may be able to run a tap through the receiver to clean up the old threads, assuming they are not beyond saving. The alternative might be to use a drill bit to clean out the damaged threads then use a tap of the next size up to rethread the receiver, and of course, use a new thumbscrew of matching thread.
You have probably done things like this before, but if not, the guys in hardware stores are usually pretty good sources of advice. |

I've had the plastic heads of thumb screws strip off-- could this be what happened? _________________ DBCooperVO.com |

Thanks Don... I'll check it out at Home Depot.
Thanks DB... It is definitely metal.
I just wish they would make things more durable. You'd think that a common part like that would be readily available in "music/recording" stores. _________________ "Bailey"

It's one of those "for want of a nail, the shoe was lost..." affairs.
Best of luck, Bailey.

have you tried contacting the manufacturer? I have had incredible success with Rode in the past going that route. Don't know about MXL though, but it's worth a shot and an email. |

That sounds like good insurance... as long as they don't ask me to return the failed product.
But I will contact them. _________________ "Bailey"

Update... update...update...
Bought brass "curled" nuts ( 2 to a package) at Loews... $1.19.
The nut works simular to a wing nut on the exiting thread... but it looks better, and now works.

Way to go!
I always love it when things can be saved so I am spared the need to spend money to replace it. I really like it when it can be done "on the cheap".
I am happy it turned out well for you! |
