No worries, we are all respectful, polite adults here.

It's hard to discuss the topic without delving into specifics.

It is a good topic...isn't it?

feel the slip-slide...

Back to the "whatcouldIdo" discussion: a bunch of years ago, a friend of mine who was just getting started in VO was asked to do one for the local Right-to-Life chapter against a candidate for office; she politely declined, saying that she didn't do political ads at all, no matter what the cause. The "producer" came back and accused her of being against the group's cause and threatened to put her on a "do not use" list of voice talents in the area. I think the producer was a member, but when she called the chapter president to protest the producer's actions, they immediately apologized for his actions and told her that they respected her decision.

I think it solidified her decision not to do any such ads (pro/con/issue/whatever) and it doesn't seem to have hurt her career.

That story sure does give Frank's opinion even more credibility.

Not that his opinion needs more credibility.

It's disappointing people would sink to that level.

I'd sure hate to see that happen.

I think the thread posts a very valid, important question.

If it helps keep the thread alive, I'm happy to redact or remove my posts.

Craig (leaving for a bit, but back later)

As the originator of this thread, I guess I should've known that it might get issue-jacked. (Since this is, after all, an election year) Wink

I think the thread's intent is just fine.
The rest of it has got to stop.

Being somewhat of a centrist, there could potentially be dilemmas either way!

Any dilemmas that appear in the making of any spot... are totally in the mind of the voice actor. There is NO set rule when dealing with a dilemma.
I don't care if the spot is about politics, cars, clothing, food, health insurance... there is always going to be a dilemma faced by some poor VO enthusiast who can't decide whether he can do a Ford commercial, without offending his family's 3rd generation love affair with Chevrolet.

If you have a problem with the issues of the commercial... turn it down. If you have a problem with the issues... and your kids are hungry... take the job. If you still have a problem with issues... and your kids are still hungry... you'd better have a day job.

I agree with Bailey. It is much easier to turn down work when you have other options. If you've got responsibilities at home, the choice is harder to make -- though I'd love someday to be in a position to turn down work for a whole host of reasons, not just political.

Artistic value, for instance...

I for one would like to see any worms that have escaped put back in the can now. This really is a place to discuss VO issues and not politically sensitive issues. Lawd knows there are plenty of other places to vent on those topics.

My apologies.

I blame Pinto. She made me do it, Mom.

Bruce, I see your blame and raise one Todd ... !

But this got me thinking about all the things you hawk in the name of work, things you might not necessarily buy or support or ever wish for, like Hummer vehicles or gastric bypass surgery or annuities. But you do the work ... right?

It's a lighter, breezier, apolitical way to look at it!

Pinto brings up an interesting point, but I wonder about the idea that you "just do the job" and to heck with the issues... if it is for something that you really don't feel comfortable with or flatly disagree with, won't it affect your performance if you go ahead and take the job anyway? I mean, what if I didn't think that Cocoa Puffs were a good thing to feed kids and furthermore, knew that they had bad side effects to them... could I give a convincing performance touting them in an ad? If not, then I would decline the job. I don't have to give a reason, right?

This actuallly has come up in some of the classes I've taken in the past; and both coaches I've studied with have had widely varying approaches to what they will and won't do. But, their responses always came down to "Do what you think is right for you."

For the record (and to keep the Cocoa Puffs League from blacklisting me Wink ), I LOVE Cocoa Puffs and think that kids aren't hurt by them (in moderation)... but it's just an example.

Well, yeah, that's pretty much what I was saying, CC.

As someone said earlier in the thread, if you're not (perceived as) a spokesperson, and are "acting the part" (read: voiceover) because you were hired to do the part, send it!

An agency called me asking me to endorse Jaguar for a local car dealer, and wanting me to say I love driving mine. Well, I said I'd do that if we could arrange trade: that they give me a Jaguar and I'd be happy to endorse it in that fashion.

Different example but ... same.
