Yeah Todd, I agree, the back of the card is a good idea. And the rest are just a method of making him THINK about what is going on with HIS card.

I am on a dual track.

I *know* i have the chops to be a Voice actor.. I'm hope I am not being conceited ( but does anyone that is really know they are??) But I also realize that I could be woefully self decieved... we'll see... my guess is that the James & Penny circus next weekend in CT will sort that out for me...

The whistling is something an x roommate said I HAD to do and have since been very encouraged. I have had people that make money in music tell me I have a great whistle.. yadda... again.. in a few weeks I will have the studio together and I can whip up a few simple demos for the website,

I will be using a two sided card... In Maine, in most cases, when someone enters a field of endeavor, they have to be non-specific or they wont; make and money.. IE a generalist.. jack of all in that area.. I see myself as that in any event, but understand I need to reduce my focus for marketing reasons.

I am at a standstill .. but I'll come out of it..

again thanks for the input and ideas!!!

Sorry I did not mean for you to start doing something else entirely different.

In the beginning of any career, there is doubt. You have taken the steps to begins with style, I congratulate you. Creating YOUR marketing style and forte' is one of the most difficult processes to start, because it involves the personal side of you being put out there in the open. I, who do marketing all the time for other people, have the most difficult time choosing my own marketing style.

How am I going to say this, should I focus on this or that, am I being to flighty, or too honest? But what if others don't like me? I ask these questions of others everyday.

Often I can answer some of them just by listening to the answers during interviews with customers and clients. These hard, personal, revealing questions help decide the premise of the marketing image and brand we help create. And, I do not like my own answers when I do the process for myself.

Using two sides of the card offers a chance to present two sides of YOU. Thanks for sharing.

You need to think bigger. You will never be able to make a living wage doing voice work in just Maine. I'm right down the street in NH. Less than 10% of the work I do is for the local market.

i find this very interesting ... it's true for me as well. as a matter of fact i hear so many people say it - it make me more sure than ever of the 50 mile expert rule (or whatever number you want to plug in there). or maybe it's just because i am in a small population center.

I'm just gonna throw this out there, for no other reason than to throw it out there, but I generally recommend NOT using pre-defined layouts that are available online or in commonly-used software for anything having to do with your branding.

I guarantee you can get somebody to create a logo JUST FOR YOU for $300 or less, and nobody else in the world will have it. For a few more bucks, the same person can probably do a spiffy business card layout for you.

It just doesn't make any sense to me to brand yourself with something completely generic.

I say this only because in a previous message in this thread, it was noted that your card design was taken from a template someplace.

I realize that the logo creation process can lead to a lot of frustrating evenings full of looking at hat-wearing microphones, but you could always ixnay that from the get-go.

Like most of our compatriots, I rarely do much close to home, but Dieter and I are pretty doggone specific with what we do, I must say.

I'm speaking from experience as a person that has been in his own business for 15 years, in that time I had several different companies that did different things. Some did well, and some did not. In my geographic area, being too specific can mean not enough business to survive.... the more dense the population the more specific you can and need to be. Ok, this doesn't really apply to VO, I know this, but I also know that being versatile in one of my strengths.

After a while I think I have my marketing settled. I need to put some work into it, but I think it encompasses what I want to say, what I have to say, and what I can do. It represents my personality and sense of humor and my versitility. I'll repost here when I have it ready for public consumption.

Vetting ideas here was very helpful in the process of figuring out how to present myself, and helped me focus.... This weekend is 3 days w/ the James & Penny road show in CT, and next weekend is playing in the sandbox with Bob Bergen in ATL... should be a mind opening and stretching two weeks!

In VO...the world is your market. Laugh

I have been meaning to pop in on this thread for a while. A local legend in VO had very similar interests as yours. His name was Ron McCroby.

His day job was as a VO talent. His love was of whistling. He knew he couldn't make a living at whistling, so he poured his time into his job and became a very sought after talent in the Midwest.

Ok so if you know this, the you probably shouldn't use it as proof of your knowledge. Being a versatile VO doesn't mean you can do things totally unrelated to VO. I would never market myself as a VO and "oh yeah, I'm awesome at video games." The two are not related. If you're versatile, then show how in the scope of VO you're versatile. The rest is just noise.

If you are studying with James and Penny, it's fair to say you are a beginner at VO, correct? If so, how do you have your "marketing settled"? For most, a marketing plan is an outline that changes based on the needs of the market and your own growth and experience.

jason - it looks like you have quite a bit of business experience ... to paraphrase f2, VO is a business just like any other (i know you KNOW this) - but it bears repeating. i think, just like any other business, before a marketing plan, you need a business plan. maybe you already have this and the rest of us are just not getting it.
