Guys, thanks for taking the time to reply. After lots of help, advice and discussions, I'm going to go with the Apogee Duet as I've been told that it has first class, clean mic pre-s built in. If I want a separate pre later on, I might get the DAV Broadhurst Gardens 7 with it's built-in de-esser and compressor.
It has been receiving rave reviews and I'm told that the as a pre, it knocks socks off the DBX 286. I called the guy who makes them today and he told me that it has a clipping level of +29dbu as opposed to the standard +18

But I think for now, my U87 with the Apogee Duet will give me a fantastic set up. Got a pair of Alesis M1 Active 520 speakers for monitoring. Very happy indeed.
