That is true for Voices.con (sic) and Bodalgo. Not quite as true for Voice123. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

The worst part of all this is how some people are completely obsessed with P2P sites.
During the lunch in LA about a month ago the biggest distraction was an UNdiscussion about P2Ps; it was agony to witness. The upside was that it did help identify the "Amish Voices" - Come out from among them and be ye separate..
"I am a wannabee Mountaineer!"
"Congratulations.! Now stop talking about the benefits of burying yourself in a pile of manure"
Should you support people who want to lower your rates and take money from you? NO! NO! A thousand times no.
Most people will only work, at best, a few times a week doing voice stuff so should promote themselves based on the fact they need fewer jobs with bigger pay days, such work is not found in the manure pile.
In the UK there exists a group of voices all of whom witter endlessly about the Union minimum rate for local radio ads. These people will not stop moaning about how unfair it is that they do not get a $1.62 raise on a $38 rate. Pointless discussion, seriously.
If anyone claims , to a degree, to be winning on the P2P sites, they do not have a formula they are either just very lucky, being less than honest or trying to sell you something.
Success in life is about being the Puppeteer NOT the puppet. |

I have to admit that this has been a very enlightening discussion thread.
Thank you all for some really great advice. I'm working on getting my demo produced, but until its ready, I dont want to start any serious marketing efforts. So in the meantime, I'm auditioning on voices quite a lot. This thread has definitely given me some ideas on how I need to approach things differently.
Again, many thanks! _________________ www.MarleyAudio.com |

There’s probably an equal amount of Yay’s and Nay’s on the topic. Those who are adamant that it's a waste of time are wrong. The P2P sites have been extremely successful for me. The bottom line is, don’t let other’s journey become yours. Try it all and find out what works for you.
Somebody said that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!
Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it;”
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat
And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.
There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure,
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing
That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it
It Couldn’t Be Done

I hesitated to jump in for this very reason. But I do have a little information that some people seem to want, so I thought it only fair to share it.
But, despite appearance to the contrary, I am not obsessed with P2Ps. I'm obsessed with Faffcon. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Are you me? (and if you are, lay off the cookies, they're not doing you any favours! oh, and call your mom.)
My demo is cobbled together from decade+ old work I did, all mixed by mad Hungarian producers who love teeth-jarring mixes with too much compression. So until I have something viable to put on a website and fling at agencies and clients, P2P it is for any new work.
...that, and I just love to complain about things. And the P2P world is such a target rich environment in that regard! _________________ Andrew Fogarasi

Methinks this is more or less a recurring dramatic scenario in the P2P discussion..
CAST
A - LIST VO Person
D - LIST (or lower) VO Person
A - Lister: "Please do not participate in the P2P's.. the glut of talent there and the bidding wars are tending to lower the rates I am accustomed to receiving, after all these years of my hard work in the business"
D - Lister: "I see.. I am not as established as yourself, . But.. you say, just stay away from the P2P's?" "I heard some people do pretty well on those sites.."
A- Lister.. "my advice would be to remove yourself from the unwashed masses..I'm not sure exactly how you are going to do that, but trust me, it will benefit us all"
I'm not sure if this would qualify as comedy, tragedy, or theatre of the absurd _________________ Lee Kanne

Proves but one thing, we are Voiceoverists and as such couldn't be interesting with 7 extra legs and our most original thoughts made Aristotle cry out loud "Been there, done that, got the ****ing toga, mate!" |

Hey! Us E-listers can't afford that fancy Amarone your set drinks, so we settle for the plonk 2litre port, or "P 2 P" for short! _________________ Andrew Fogarasi

The leftover pomace from Amarone produces a more potent, and rich, quite tasty Valpollicella.. _________________ Lee Kanne

And my all-time favorite,

I don't know. I certainly don't have enough experience to speak with the voice of experience, so I won't try (he probably wouldn't answer my calls, anyway). Some people make money on the p2p sites. Some don't. Some see it as too much investment for not enough return.
Some people like Pepsi, others like Coke.
And some people think that the one they don't like tastes like bug spray.
That said, my (meager) experience with p2p is that I am in too much of a hurry and too busy during the day when projects are first posted to do a good job of finding entries that suit me, so I tend to do a handful of auditions on any Tom/Dick/Harry crap, then feel sad that nobody cares. So, my heart just ain't in it, and that's reflected in the abysmal quality of my work. I do have a few long-term relationships with clients I met on two of the three p2p sites I've used, so it's not *all* been in vain, but it does not work with my general me.
Not getting much satisfaction from drinking bug spray, I'm quitting drinking it. Strictly coffee from here on out. _________________ Finally, Ford stops starting to say things and starts. |
