Hi everyone...
The last couple of months I have endured something I've never experienced before...dry, chapped and splitting lips!
I'm not talking about just the occasional annoying or slight discomfort that passes quickly. This has been an on-going trial that had about streched me(ouch...wrong choice of words there) to the limit. The slightest movement (especailly a smile or a laugh) would instantly undo any hint of healing that had managed to take place. As you might imagine, trying to get through a read without another self-inflicted wound had become impossible.
The ever patient, kind, compassionate and long-time love of my life... and my resident lip-doo expert...Mrs DeHart...shared her traditonal remedies: Carmex, Chapstick, Blistex etc, etc... and even some kind of fancy packaged lip moisturizer guaranted to restore that youthful pouty look. Nothing came close to working. My lips still looked like cracked mud at the bottom of an dry lake bed.
It sounded totally crazy (and even a little kinky) when I heard of this "home remedy" but desperate men do desperate things!
And now (insert drum roll here)...Nipple Cream to the rescue!
At least that's what its known as on the street. It's 100% medical grade lanolin without any fragrance so the nursing babys don't turn up their nose at mealtime. Breatfeeding moms will probably recognize it by its trade name Lansinol but I bought the generic equivalent at CVS and I can only say aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh  I used it when I got back from a session last night about 8pm and applied again when I went to bed about 12:30 and this morning...a genuine overnight cure! This stuff is absolutely amazing. And one tube is probably a lifetime supply as a tiny amount goes a long, long way.

I'm glad that you found a solution to your discomfort but I think that you should consider the cause. You didn't mention a cause. Your problem seemed to come from nowhere.
Is it a real dry Winter in Houston? If not, I would wonder if you are drinking enough water. You may be dehydrated or have some other type of problem. Lips do not normally look like a dry lake bed. If you don't know the cause, I would highly recommend looking into it.
Just trying to help... and thanks for sharing that miracle cure!

I don't know what triggered the problem...I drink a couple gallons of water a day as I have for years (no that's not a typo) and haven't had any changes in diet or medication etc.
But, the weather may well be a factor...Houston has been without any significant rain for months. Our normal "winter" temps of highs in the 60/70s and lows around 50 didn't occur either. I've had to run the AC to deal with highs in the low 90s. I've had to add water to the pool three times in the last six weeks because of the evaporation. Instead of weather alerts for flooding and tornadoes we are under fire warnings  Normally, our relative humidity runs in the 80-90% range and we have been between 30 to 50%. I know that sounds like its pretty humid by LV standards but around here.....that's really dry!
Thanks for your thoughts! If my relief proves to be temporary I'll be sure to check with the medicos just in case.

A B-vitamin deficiency will also cause lip chapping...but you didn't mention any other symptoms (like bad dry-mouth), and there are a lot of them, so it's probably not that.

Nope, no dry mouth...just the lips. And I don't suspect a vitamin deficiency as the heart doc recommended B supplements after the ole ticker incident a couple years ago and I've been on high dosages ever since. Thanks for the suggestion PJ!

Dave, I'm glad you found something that did the trick.
What annoys me about "moisturizing" creams of all kinds is, they contain glycerin. Yes, glycerin holds moisture, but it takes the moisture it needs from its environment. So, unless you are in a higher than 65% humidity it takes that moisture from... the deeper levels of your skin. So you get relief when you put the cream on, but pretty soon you're drier than when you started and so the cycle begins again.
And don't get me started on the other additives..... |

Dave, I remember that stuff from my wife's pregnancy days... it DOES work well. Something else worked equally well, and it has an even nuttier name. It's called Bag Balm. It comes in an old-fashioned green metal can with a pic of a cow's udder on it. It's actually formulated for the dry teats of milk-cows. You can't find it just anywhere. Vet supply stores have it...ocassionally you'll find a drug store or pharmacy that'll have it. I don't ever remember finishing a can of it. The stuff lasts forever! (farm-boy memories).

I actually have a jar of stuff called "Udder Cream" that I use on the dog's belly and feet. Works well for softening up one's hands too, but I'm not sure I'd try it as a lip balm. I might though.

Yeah...you've just explained why the Carmex, Blistex, Chapstick and all the other typical stuff didn't do me any good...in fact...aggravated the situation. I guess I'm just a little on the delicate side

Hey... I've heard of Bag Balm but I've never seen it in the store here. Now if I was back home in Oklahoma I wouldn't be surprized if you could find in on the end-cap display at the grocery store  Come to think of it... I bet if I drove a just a few miles north to 'Cut N Shoot' (a real town) they would have it.

Dave - I love the packaging. I wonder what BagBalm is made of?
The BagBalm.com site doesn't give any info on the ingredients other than to say it is loaded with lanolin.
My fat cat Frankie has skin complaints, and if this is safe for animals I would be excited - at the moment we are using antihistamine cream and I don't like to, but it is the only thing that brings him relief whilst we try to find the cause of the allergy. |

| My husband has a jar of that stuff that he appropriated after our twin yoots were weaned. He uses it for his eczema and finds it to be efficacious. |
