George Whittam had a recent recommendation for headphones and I can't recall what it was, nor find it on search. It wasn't the Sonys - Beyerdynamics? I've been editing Ulf's audiobooks and we need a second set (in addition to the Sonys we already have) that I can use when editing on my laptop.
George - you around?

You will find many positive comments here about the Sony MDR7506 headphones. A common price for them is $90 but doing a Google search I found B&H Video (also a trusted provider) is offering them for $79.99 with free "expedited shipping". When you go to this link it may show $99.99 but click on "shipping details" and you get the better deal.

I'll be the contrarian.
I have a pair of 7506s, and while they are pleasant for me since they add some high end, they are not particularly flat. Their presence bump in the mids/highs is noticeable. Not saying it's bad, it just isn't flat.
I use Senn 600s while editing or prepping audio for clients. They are open-back, though, so not useable in the booth. But they are flat and wonderful at my desk.
In the booth, I've switched from the Sonys to the venerable Beyerdynamic DT770s. They too have a bump, though in the lower end, but it's very subtle. Without the high-end boost, they feel more transparent and honest to me. Plus their isolation is quite a bit better than the Sonys, which while a tremendous value are still on the lower end of the quality spectrum.
As with mics or anything else, this stuff depends on your sound and your ear. Not everyone wants to spend $200 - $300 on headphones, and in terms of value the Sonys win hands down. _________________ Jack Daniel

And when I can borrow from a friend, the value is especially good.
I get it, though, and when we are in the market to shop around a bit, we may look into changing over.
We have one set of the Sonys out in the studio, and, borrowed value aside, I think it might be good to use the same ones when I edit the audiobooks on the laptop, for a layer of consistency - although it is true the sound out of the laptop will differ anyway. Still, might as well stay consistent where I can.
I've been (stupidly) using earbuds on the laptop and then when double-checking in the studio with the Sonys discovering all kinds of noises I didn't hear before. This makes for way too much wasted work time.
I know, I know....it's a forehead-smacky kind of thing. |

My own list of forehead-smack-worthy bumblings is extensive. _________________ Jack Daniel

Smacking? ... That's what foreheads are for. If you don't make mistakes and learn from them, then you're not really moving forward. That's my inspirational quote of the day
As far as the 7506 are concerned... the only downside (IMO) is that the pads wear out and crack up. I treated myself to some $20 replacements by "Wicked Cushions" and they've given the cans another ten years of daily use!

... and the MDR-7506 are now only $80... actually cheaper than they used to be! (Bruce listed the B&H... but here's the Amazon link)

Oh Kim, please don't beat yourself up.
Just ditch the earbuds, and repeat the mantra above (you know, the one about learning from your mistakes).
Moving on ... with excellent cans!

No worries Karyn- no beating at all - just the light forehead smackiness, common to most people when the light bulb goes off.
As Bish said, it's what foreheads are for. |

Get yourself a set of Garfield Headphone Softie Earpad Covers
B&H or your favorite audio supplier. They come in several colors. Warm in the winter, cool in the summer. |

Bruce and Emma have just informed me that there's a fabulous British Tea Room in Beaverton, Kim.
They sell Flake bars.
Next time you're in town, we shall go.
Hooray for tea! _________________ * * * * * * * * * *

I'm probably WAYYY too late on this, very sorry. The black hole gravitational pull that is social media is taking its toll on my attention to this forum.
I like the sound Audio Technica ATH-M40x or M50x more than the DT770, but the DT770 is more comfortable for extended periods of time. They both trounce the Sonys for sound and build quality, too. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
