I got TWO auditions last week that require a read in an "intercontinental accent". Does anyone know what that sounds like, or can you point me to a Website or demo that could help?
Thanks, and Happy 4th! _________________ Enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal.

Probably just a cultured, un-pin-down-able European accent. This is one of my favorite sources for accents:

Just make somethin' up. |

Just make something up!!! Good idea, the client did!! There is no such thing as an accent in Europe that one can't pin down. I know, do well informed educated American ...Oh no, there we go again, no such thing. Humble Texan? Chirpy Russian? Non-snearing Brit ?....Tsk, now I'm just being ridiculous.
Client doesn't really know what he wants and as free auditions are readily available .....Waste a lot of peoples time. |

Does the client mean "received British"?

I think Banksey's hit the nail on the head here. Exactly. First of all..in what language? Yes, we'd like a western Swede with a hint of Moraccan twang. |

There are plenty of accents in Europe that this client can't pin down. Give 'em one of those. If the client doesn't know what he/she wants, give them something they would have wanted if they had known. Then they will think you're brilliant because you nailed it. |

Um....when I asked my agent for more clarification she said "unidentifiable" accent. The audition due tomorrow is for a medical narration, but I had one on Friday for Intel and one several months ago for the Hilton and they all asked for the same thing. Perhaps this is a trend??
Whatever. I'll make something up and if I get the job I'll post the audition. _________________ Enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal.

This will either help... or confuse. At Harvard Square they are teaching a program entitled Intercontinental Foreign Language:
The Intercontinental Foreign Language Program is the foremost proponent of SIMULTANEOUS LANGUAGE LEARNING in the United States. In an Internet-linked & multicultural workplace, no one can afford to be monolingual and no one has the time for conventional - one at a time - serial language learning.
This link explains better than I can:

My 2 cent opinion of an Intercontinental Accent... an accent that is not fully definable or appears to be connected to any particular language (accent). Some would call it a "melting pot". If it were my audition, I would definitly be speaking english, but with an accent that they couldn't really nail down. _________________ "Bailey"

Actually, I posted a job on this list where the client was looking for exactly that - undefinable, broad range accented English. After much searching (I only do non-sneering British and a WAY too French French) he plumped for the Egyptian lady. Her accent seems to be everything rolled into one, and unless you were in the know, you couldn't pinpoint it.
Have a listen to http://www.silkvoice.co.uk/ and the last sample on the Samples page for an Egyptian accent.

Hi - I edited my last post to show a demo site, then realized you might not see it if you were looking for new posts. www.silkvoice.co.uk - it's not the same lady, as the one who landed the job didn't have a demo, (even though she reads news, and does VO ) so I did her one here at my studio which isn't on the net anywhere. Anyways, the one at silkvoice is a pretty good example. |

Havard intercontinental melting pot = Guten tag, mes amies. Frightfully good giorno. Je pense yon numpties frae the univeritsy ablo nada idea jest so tell the lecturer, es stulti in errore perseverare.
Out of respect to this new trend, I am now offering "Intercontinental reads". Any Magic Pixies wishing to hire me for such reads will have to use the specially equipped studios just a short flight by battle cruiser beyond the stained quadrant in the Gargalia sector of the Quiet Zone.
People who ask for this sort of thing have PhDs in why the Emporer really did have new clothes. Displaying knowledge is one thing, parading ones ignorance is quite another.
By the way, I'm trying to get the local accent/dialect in Moray a wider audience. Although I come from the south of England I know live on the north east coast of Scotland in the county of Moray. The next time you meet someone, greet them thus.
For a male "Aye aye, fit like ma loon" = "Hello, how are you young man?"
For a female "Aye aye, fit like ma quine" = "Hello, how are you young lady?"
By the way, y'all have a nice day y'hear. |

Meet you half way? I've added to my resume/demo an incontinent read. For those who don't know it's heavy on the "P" sound. |
