So I've begun doing research to put together an accent/dialect demo. I decided to start with a British accent since it's something I've done before but never really developed fully.
I love the English accent!
But little did I know how many variations there were.
I have a write up on my blog but would love a critique of it here:

That nearly made a whole bunch of tea come thru me nose Philip, you wag.

Dear James— you need to give a good listen to a whole bunch of
I mean, some really fine British television shows and good films. What you have is sounds like an American fellow trying out a little bit of British.

For starters: Your placement needs to change, and you need to be excruciatingly aware of pronunciations like the word "rather".

Also— I hope you wouldn't make your real accent demo like this—an explanation of accents and how they're used. Ideally you'll be putting together samples of lines that are carefully crafted and fully acted.

I love that sheep avatar— it's a scream.

Tea shooting going on here, too. That was great, Philip. Do you, by any chance, have a picture of a hag-ass?

James, don't take Philip's teasing personally. I think he's merely trying to say that it isn't ready for primetime. As a rule of thumb, if you can't fool a native, then keep practicing before you try to sell it.

Take comfort in knowing that his American accent won't fool anyone, either. Smile

Jeffrey were you just challenging Philip by saying:

"Take comfort in knowing that his American accent won't fool anyone, either." ???

Nope, wasn't a challenge, though Mr. Banks is free to prove me wrong on the issue.

The only Brit I've seen do a flawless American accent is Hugh Laurie.

Then you need to watch Battlestar Galactica...I would never have guessed that Jamie Bamber (Lee "Apollo" Adama) was British...flawless.

Also, check out The Riches, or most stuff that Minnie Driver has done with an American Accent...she's incredible, too.

There are other Brits whose American accents are good enough to fool us natives, but I'm blanking right now other than the two above.

Another Greatest American Accent Award goes to Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce in L.A. Confidential.
Good ol' Peter Ustinov was pretty spiffy, too.

Oh...Naomi Watts, Christian Bale and Anthony LaPaglia are others (so long as it's ok to include Australians).
