Always worth bearing in mind that the bunged up sensation that makes us feel and sound awful is not caused by the yeuk up our noses but by inflammation as our bodies try to fight the infection. Unless you are taking something that fights the infection "de Imb all blogged ub" feeling will stay with you until things have run their natural course. Do yourself and your clients a favour - Take 3 days off, drink as much as you can and do nothing. The reason these problems stay with us for weeks on end is because we bravely try to soldier on.

Take three days off and do nothing. . .

Hmm. . .I already do that when I'm AT the office. But March 30 thru April 10, I'll be taking those days off and doing. . .well. . .more than nothing. . .

Anthony-

here is my attempt at sounding like I know what I am talking about when it comes to stuffy noses. i have had alot of them...but with the same nose ofcourse....anyway. unless you have a common cold that you'll soon get over you probably have allergies like I do. I battle these things year round and there is an allergy for every season here in Ohio. One thing that helped me was to get an x-ray of my nasal passages. when i did that i found out i had a deviated septum. surgery fixed that and it helped alot with draingae, congestion etc caused by the allergies. i get an allergy shot in each arm once a week and it yes it is a pain...but it has helped. the stuffy noses are less frequent now but when they come Flonase works good. Saline spray is always good if you keep squirting it frequently up your nose. i rarely have to take an allegra D or Claritan nowadays except for when i get really stuffy. when i have a sinus infection pretnizone will clear it up like nothing else.

bottom line advice from my humble opinionated nose.....get checked out by an ENT doc and get an x ray if you need to. then maybe see an allergist for treatments....but stay away from the cayanne pepper. i used it once and once only. sent me and my head into a tizzy and i promised God if he saved me from its affects I would never use again...lol...seriously. just my advice.

Okay,

My wife's a nurse with allergies, and I'd honest-to-God never heard of a Neti pot before.

Google!

I've been through the over the counter nose spray wars - decided to stick with saline sprays. Then recently, my Doctor suggested Nasarel for my allergies, instead of the Zyrtec I had been using.

The Nasarel doesn't seem to cause the "rebound effect" common to over the counter sprays and it does clear things up quite nicely.

Nasarel is by prescription only. It works.

I first heard about Neti pots in James Alburger's book. Never tried one until I got what turned out to be one of the worst colds I've ever had a few weeks ago and then every other person I encountered told me to try a Neti pot, including my own husband so I got one to stop their yammering. It was hugely helpful. It makes sense from a biochemical point of view - fluids are gonna flow in the direction of higher salt concentration (that's osmosis, baby), so you'll draw fluids out of yer swollen nasal pages (inflammation is not just random puffiness, it results from an excess of fluids - granted the fluids have rushed in due to the body trying to balance the region osmotically since there are so many white blood cells and T cells and so forth there, fighting infection. Inflammation is painful because it puts pressure on nerves, and long-term inflammation can lead to tissue damage. I really don't think you need to suffer through this).

Alburger has a recipe for the salt solution - 16 oz filtered water, a slightly rounded tsp non-iodized salt - Kosher salt since regular salt has additives - and a slightly rounded half tsp of bicarbonate of soda. Use 8 oz of this solution for each side of the schnozz. Don't forget yer swim trunks. No, seriously, it's not that bad. But you'll probably want privacy.
