I can't dispute that Leslie has made excellent points.

My apologies for having unwittingly (at first) hijacked the thread.

Skype is a valuable tool. I use it nearly daily to communicate with clients. Plus, I have rigged it as my go-to phone patch. It is almost FM quality.

Twitter. I haven't logged in over a year. Truly "digital noise" in my opinion..

As for FB, It's a mix of family, old, old college friends and former pals and colleagues from my TV news days. A few of my clients insist on working with me via that modality. So, I keep my posts pretty banal. Actually, rarely post at all.

Frankly, I don't have the time to engage in most of it.

That being said, my brand is Linkedin via FB and a few others. Hence, I find it dangerous to use it as a bully pulpit to espouse my political views. I hold those views close to the chest, as they're nobody's business but mine.

Faceprobes is personal for me, but I make two exceptions: religious beliefs and political viewings as throwing that into the faces of people who didn't ask for it is pointless and ultimately serves as a, nowadays, banal instigator.

Signal-to-noise ratio. It's remarkable how much more attention I give the people, unwitting or not, who care about that simple expression.

Agreed. And even in Entre Nous there is little reason to reveal too much potentially polarizing detail about oneself.

Outstanding, Don! It was hard to pick a favorite out of that brilliant graphic, but if I had to, it would be the "MySpace burial ground".

Skype sounds better than Google Voice, and now Skype is all integrated with Outlook/Facebook/Microsoft, etc. so it's great for me (at least). My clients even message me over it.

Twitter works best when it's not a bulletin board. Use it to message people. I follow production houses, they follow me back, they read my blogs, etc. and some of them hire me for work. I use this same model on Google Plus and that works too. With the younger set, email is almost completely dead. It's networks and places like twitter where ideas are shared.

This isn't the place to explain further, but I think everybody needs to be more political, no matter what their beliefs are; and being political doesn't just mean sharing the latest snarky memes or easily followed digests. From my film/video production background, everyone was crazily political, even on set. Nobody got their feelings hurt, and nobody lost a client. It was fun. I don't why there is such a code among VO folks to stay politically mum.

I use Skype extensively; it's the perfect phone patch for me. If I have a client who wants to use Skype, no problem. If they want to use a phone line, I give them my Skype number and I still use Skype.

Works brilliantly, and I dual-track record so they hear me, I record me, and I hear them, and record them on a separate track. Makes edit time a LOT easier when I can track who said what and about what take.

I also do get political, but never in a conservative vs. liberal manner.

I will, from time to time, post something that can be construed as "political," but, like you, avoid the ideological (or is that idiot-illogical?). I generally focus my barbs on easy targets like politicians or Facebook-posting political zealots. When my most outspokenly liberal and most outspokenly conservative FB friends give me a "Like" on the same post, I know I'm safe.

I did a session directed over Google chat last week,..seemed to be less problematic than Skype can be...

On the political commentary front, does anyone remember a couple of years ago, there was a fairly high-profile VO who made some political comments on his blog, and the backlash was huge!...

Oh yes, yes I do...he admitted in a following press release that what he did was "STUPID!" and he didn't blame the company for dropping him and said that they had always been good to him.

What he did was not like having a political tweet or blog entry. He left a voicemail...and I think the fallout sent a chill across the VO community. Nobody wants to be that guy - but you know what, I think his career is just fine, maybe better than ever.
