I love the p2p discussions.
Cold calling is not a bad thing, but not for everyone. I think there are two kinds of cold calling: the kind where you're a pain in the rear, waste the other guy's time and get nowhere, and the kind where you've already determined your target probably (or, at the very least, *might*) need your service in the first place.
I've had better results from cold calling - and what you might call "lukewarm calling," with a heads-up from a mutual friend - than from p2p. This may sound masochistic, but I find it more relaxing and enjoyable than auditioning on p2p sites, and I get to screen and vet my prospects and take my time. Admittedly, my clients are not billion-dollar companies, but it's nice to actually connect - and their money spends the same, so it just doesn't suck. _________________ Finally, Ford stops starting to say things and starts. |

I have gone through every state of emotion with the P2P question. Now I choose to be indifferent. I audition very selectively and do quite well from them. My time invested is worthwhile when compared with the income generated. Some time ago it was not worthwhile because I spent far too much time wringing my hands and beating my head against the desk because of their policies and machinations.
My advice to anyone... use them, don't use them... but don't let them become more important and time-consuming than they are worth. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Unless you're talking about hot dogs. Ketchup does not belong anywhere near a hot dog. _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

If you're a voice talent, and you don't reach out to the World, the World will not come to you for your services. You've got three basic choices beyond the inertia and starving routine:
1) You either make the phone calls and send the emails and snail mail to people who hire voice talent,
2) Or you meet those same kind of people at a P2P site and audition as much as you want for what you want,
3) Or you hire agents or sign up with production houses who/which, in theory, will track down work for you. However they are very much like P2Ps these days in that they mostly hand you auditions to do. They are better auditions than P2P auditions on average and you don't pay an up front fee, but it's the same idea.
There is actually a 4th way to get work and that's to get into the position that Philip has where he has agents that work hard for him and find him work to do. He's on a roll as we say, and his particular style is very marketable. He got there by doing a lot of Option 1 in his early days. And he's staying in his position by being warm and gracious with his clients and agents. And from what I've read he still does outreach and the occasional audition when asked.
So, for most of us it's 1, 2, or 3, or a mix of those with a desire of getting to 4. For most of us, P2Ps have the lowest rate of return for time and money spent, but they do serve a useful purpose for those who apply themselves.
So, we're all correct. They all beat not working.
As some shoe company once said, "Just do it!"

A lot of great input here, thanks very much to all! I have a good sense of how I'll proceed -- and it's not because something did or didn't work for someone else, it's because I think it will work for me (but hearing what did and didn't work for others is quite helpful to me!).
Philip, you're as abstruse as ever. I don't always understand what you're trying to say, but I enjoy trying.
Cheers,
Rich |

Then let me ask you this. Where did you get that $30 / 200 word job you spoke of? I'm not putting it down, just asking where you got it. Did you cold call, network, or (fill in the blank) With that in mind, how many connections or calls did you have to make to get it? Did it take you 15 minutes to book it, or numerous contacts or calls totaling over an hour or two? I don't know the answers to these, but there has to be one that has consumed some of your time. Now, how much is that time worth? |
Actually with this job, I got it off one of the "dollar-a-holler" sites: Freelancer.com. It was a project I bid on and did a few weeks ago and the client has turned into a weekly recurring job. Its still pennies, but its money.
It took about 20 minutes to record, another 40 or so to edit and send off to the client, so it really wasnt that much trouble for me, which is why I still do these kinds of jobs. If it took more effort or time, It wouldnt be worth it. _________________ www.MarleyAudio.com |
