Nobody in the States can pronounce "Deirdre".

DB Williams —> DB Cooper thanks to the State Cops in Mass when I was doing traffic reports for WBZ.

My real name is Rob Marley

So far, its helped people remember me.

Maybe I should create a tweet where I talk about how my name has helped my VO business.

Then I can re-tweet that tweet three times a day. Every day. Just like some other people. Rolls Eyes

It really is painful, isn't it? Every time I see it, I roll my eyes and think to myself, "Again? I don't ca-a-a-are!!"

I understand he uses some kind of automated tweet system. And I know marketing is important, but GOOD GOD that can get annoying. So far, I have yet to see any reason why I should even be following him.

Not sure who you're talking about, but some people mistakenly think that Social Media is all about numbers (both in terms of output and number of followers) when in fact, it's all about creating, building and maintaining relationships.

And my guess is that it's next to impossible to build actual, human relationships using a robotic, automated "tweet system."

I use "Liz" instead of the full-way-too-long-official "Elizabeth"
So yes...sorta! Smile

I sometimes feel sorry for our ex-radio guys who had name changes forced upon them. I also understand that some names just don't work in the media industry (non-intuitive pronunciation etc.)

As for carpet-bombing social media... the numbers game is just an extension of vanity publishing... serves no purpose (except to massage the ego) and can actually have a detrimental effect by becoming bloody annoying. This is one of the reasons I only look at Twitter on an infrequent basis... every time I look, it's the same crap from the same people clogging the stream and burying the smat-arsed one-liners (which is the only good thing about Twitter).

Two thoughts:

1. Check out Danah Boyd's talk on "autistic" social software - here

2. The early TV spots for Microsoft Bing - while not about social software per se, the mechanical spouting of related words nails it.

Edit - looking at Boyd's paper, the word "Turkle" is used. Granted, the last two letters are transposed, but eerie!

Holy carp!

Now that I'm paying attention to it, I just saw a VO Twitter-er whose stream is FILLED with pre-written, pre-scheduled, (probably pre-ignored) generic, self-promotional automated filler. Something on the order of 50/day.

Just think of all the dead, digital trees that've made the ultimate sacrifice.

Oy.

Yeah Lizzy, but you can work yours out with a modicum of effort... it's not a "random letters from a scrabble bag" name Smile

I think the acid test nowadays is "What type of mess would John Travolta make of it" cool

I just randomly searched for "difficult name" and up popped "Apichatpong Weerasethakul" (a film director)... Now, while not wanting to appear politically incorrect, he wouldn't be doing himself any favours if he was trying to get market recognition in the VO world. Pleople are fundamentally lazy and would probably skip over him regardless of his talents. Simplified to "Api Weeras", he's good to go.

Or his cousin, Bridie Hemmerschlagen.

I can probably guess who this is (and it's somebody we genuinely like) because I see stuff tweeted over and over again and ask myself, "why is he still posting this?"

Chris, thanks for the link to the Danah Boyd article...I have a particular interest in the subject matter and found it fascinating...much appreciated!

And as for Professor Turkle, I've been a fan of hers for some time, (but don't have any idea if we're related). Smile
