"G" has my vote - and I think I need one. NOW! Is Guitar Center open at
9:00? Wait! I don't know what it is! |

I forgot about Guitar Center. I'm sorry to say that their mail order branch, Musicians Friend, does not carry Studio Projects mics. zZSounds does, as well as Sweetwater and Humbucker in Atlanta. (Humbucker is still selling the C1 at the $199 price.) |

Sorry Bill, but you won't find G anywhere for $199.
Hell, you can't even get the shockmount for that.

Sniff, sniff....Mmmm, yes. There is something of the U87 in there. But there's something not quite right. Not quite the same. Something missing and yet....oh so very German.

Wow. The SP B1 must be really expensive in Japan. |

Hmmm, so if you take 87 and add 16 you come up with 103....which would lead to a TLM-103 maybe?

It would indeed! So G is a TLM103.
But what about E, that other popular beast. Care to take a guess. Not particularly difficult actually.
The big surprise for me was A, It performed a lot better than I expected. Anyone willing to take a guess at what it is? First one to get it right within the next 24 hours wins one! (only one guess each though)

Is that Maiku's patented tin-can-and-catgut long-distance sound transporter? _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I'm guessing that A is a dynamic mic (it's got more self-noise than the others, either from the mic itself or from having to crank up the pre). If so, it's either an RE20 or SM7b. Hmmmm. I say an SM7b. |

Next we need to post a test of the same mic but with different coloured leads. Or to make it extra, extra special have some with gold pins and some without! |

All right- I'm way late to the game.
A. Noisy
B. Bassy
C. Crisp! interesting in the high end
D. In-a-cardboard-box sound
E. BIG frontal presence. Big and Full
F. Flat and noisy
G. BIG!!! but too bassy for my taste
H. This one had an odd sound profile to me. Lots of representation in the spectrum, but an odd ring like a Røde NTK.
I. Clean!
Mic I was my fave. I have heard that females tend to favor sound mixes with a good helping of treble, and I am certainly in that camp.
I also like the one all others flock to: E.
I also wonder how much impact my studio headphones have on all of this!
Probably a lot.
addendum: Just listening on my tiny Powerbook speakers H is head-and-shoulders over all the others. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I like E, I and then G.
A sounds like a Shure SM58 to me.
E is the U87
I is one of the Studio Projects mics?
Just my guess...not sure if you gave the answers and I missed it somewhere in the thread. _________________ Ben

I guess I should have made it clear: I listened on my Studio speakers first, then on the near-fields.
I do this to give a representation of how something would sound in different environments and with little tiny laptop speakers or TV speakers or even car radio speakers, etc.
I use the JBL's to let me hear the most "true" representation based upon my system.
Each set of speakers has their place and allows one to hear what it would sound like in different environments. I usually do a different mix for IVR, radio and online, than I would for large rooms or Video, Film, DVD's, etc.

Maiku - I think it is about time you let us all in on the secret "key" as to which mic is which... what do you think? Please don't keep me in suspenders any longer... please, please... ROFL
