Thanks Bob (and Scott)...

I suspected Voices but just couldn't connect the dots with TOS.

Hee hee...

I always have a hard time with Rodriguez - if I try to say it like a "Merican. If I roll the "r's" then it is easier, but then it doesn't sound right in context. Warm up, warm up, warm up.

Had a script for Mercator Abdominoplasty (a new technique for planning the surgery that uses map making techniques) yesterday that was filled with complex words and and equally complex sentence structure.

I was asked to use the second pronunciation for Mercator [MER-cah-tor - not Mer-K-ter]...I think because the client is not a native English speaker and perhaps he pronounces it with a French accent.

Well Connie, at least you don't play a Les Nessman (WKRP in Cincinatti) with Ch-eye Ch-eye Rod-wa-gw-eeze.

Aren;t languages fun, especially English, and yes that includes the "Kings English" for our family across the pond.

Toodles

Oh come come now Frank. The KING'S English hasn't been spoken in the UK since February 2, 1952.

Good heavens Brian!!!

What the heck did you do with that one?

I recently had to do an on-hold thing for a company that sells high end wedding wear. The word "couturier"? They wanted me to pronounce it "cort- ee-ay".

Talk about an "it isn't about me" moment. I did try to talk them out of it but the client had specifically told the producer how it should be pronounced. And they never came back for a re-take.

Lordy.

Crikey. Ree-DISH-iss-lee?
I see it misspelled a lot, with an "E" in place of the first "I", but not missing one of the "L"s —that's a first.

Couturier as CORT-ee-ay?

Hellfire and damnation. Quelle ignorance.

Incidentally, the same copy included this sentence: NO PROBLEM, WE'RE HERE TO HELP YOU OBLIGATE YOUR END OF THE FISCAL YEAR FUNDS.

Mind you this is for a radio commercial. At least they aren't here for all my ____ needs.

Well, some folks don't like the correct pronunciation of English words...

Courtier should be {kawr-tee-er} at least after careful consideration, but then in U-taw-r everythangs spohken dif-rnet. (translation: in Utah everything is spoken differently). And, I personally think it should be "Courvoisier".

Frank, I think the word should have been "couture" in the first place.

So many people hear a word or phrase and have never seen it spelled out that they think they are using the right word. One phrase that comes to mind is "Butt Naked" instead of "Buck Naked." They have heard someone use it (correctly or incorrectly) and if they don't know the origin, it seems to make sense using the word butt.

Connie-- a Couturier is the person who makes the fine clothes:

Quote:
a fashion designer who manufactures and sells clothes that have been tailored to a client's specific requirements and measurements.
