The Park Lane Hotel was rigged and ready to rock by 6.30pm. My post was next to Neil the lights and Simon the sound looking down on the assembled glitterati in the Ballroom.

I spent all night trying to make "and the nominations for ....." sound interesting" and by 2315 it was all over. Caught up with Debs the producer who asked me for comments. What went right what went wrong? She plans to use me for other events. The fee and more importantly the live buzz means that I will say yes to the next gig.

On my mic and on the channel for my mic on the mixer were the letters VOG!

For those who are interested in escaping the VO booth prison there's a good living in this type of work. Like most things it's harder than it looks. Ok! It isn't, I didn't even break a sweat.

As ever, Philip is right.
It turns out there are large, thriving companies who specialize exclusively in staging company awards extravaganzas. I had thought it to be a small, niche market, but Toronto alone has 82 such companies employing over a thousand people. They do not carry their own voice talents.

I do a couple such shows per year (at $800 to $1,000 per). At the last one, the techies related how their outfit had just returned from a three-day gig in Japan.
It ain't small potatos.

Who knew?

Yes, I concur - I had a flurry of these live backstage corporate announcing gigs this year - and the group that brings me in is so much fun! It does get a bit tense when the person coming to the stage has one of those multi-multi-syllabic names from far far away.

You can't beat LIVE.
LIVE is putting your money where your mouth is.
There's no backspace in LIVE.
LIVE is a one-shot deal.
You can't use "white-out" in LIVE.
There is no 2nd or 3rd take in LIVE.
LIVE gives you a "rush".
Anyone who has ever done theater, knows what I'm talking about.
