I quite agree.
When I am confronted (and it is a confrontation) with a wall of text on the index page of a site, "Methinks the lady doth protest too much."
I understand about the desire to share professional info, but I don't think your first page is the place for it. I am approaching this "argument" from a casting standpoint. I don't read anything unless it's short enough to simply glance at and get the gist. Anyone with a mass of self-spiffing gets clicked past. Yeah, it's a possibility that I might miss a great voice or two, but it's definite I won't deal with that person's probable brittle ego.
End Clients who may be shopping for voices might enjoy reading about your professional attributes and offerings, but as Lou suggests, a bio page is the best place for that.
As with anything YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY!
If you write well, none of the foregoing applies to you anyway.
Honestly, though— nobody cares how long you've been "in the business". _________________ DBCooperVO.com

This is an excellent point!
As a web developer, clients have often been offended when I tell them that people DO NOT LIKE TO READ on the web and don't want to read the 847 pages of content they've written for their new website.
While there are certainly exceptions to this, the VAST majority of people don't want to read stuff they didn't come there to read.
As DB said, if somebody's going to your website to perhaps cast you, they want to hear your voice and then contact you if they like you. Make sure those two things are easy to find and do, and everything else is fun & gravy. _________________ Lou Zucaro

My "About Dave" page has definitely landed me work.
Several clients have told me they found a "real person" behind the demo's...or they saw a possible expertise in my history they wanted to depend upon...or they wanted to talk more about a commonality we share, and it's led to a certain amount of "trust" that resulted in a job.
But, as mentioned in this thread....it's NOT up front.
Like DB says.... your mileage may vary.

| I went the "first person" and "informative" route. "Third person" sounds like I have a staff of folks, which I don't. |

Thank God for that!
I guess the bottom line is, potentials just care whether your voice can consistently deliver what they want.
I love this group. It's so educational, encouraging and fun! _________________ Intuit and do it!

| Just realized I haven't said 'thanks' yet for all the comments in this thread. It's interesting to get different perspectives, and I really appreciate it. I may end up trying a couple of different versions and running them up the critiques section flagpole when the time comes. |
