This "compander" you mention... it doesn't seem to exist in my AA, at least not under that name. Might it be called something else?

Laura,
What version of AA do you use? It should be in "Dynamics Processing" in the effects tab.
I have been doing a few audio books this year. About to start another one. I have a set of parameters that I use as a guide for my final editing as to spacing, then depending on how it sounds, I adjust that. It takes time, but I'm pretty happy with the results.
commas - .2 sec
colon, parentheses, etc... .4
sentences .75
To do this fairly quickly, when I start to edit, I grab a .2 second section of normal silence from within the recording and copy that. I keep that in the clipboard to use as a Paste. So if I have an area that needs the .2, I highlight in between the waveforms and Paste. If I need the .4, I just Paste it twice.
As I said, it's just a guideline, but it keeps me consistent from beginning to end on how the sentences flow so that Chapter 1 sounds the same as Chapter 18. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

| Found it! Thanks Bob. Not sure it makes all that much difference though - been playing around with it and the breaths actually seem to get a bit louder... |

Laura--I wouldn't use 'compander' to rid or reduce audibility of breath. perhaps create a shortcut of -15 dB or some such and make it a hot key on your keyboard. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Now that sounds like the sort of thing I should know how to do, I mean I understand all the words in isolation...
If you wouldn't mind, could you explain it to me from the beginning, ie what buttons do I click on in AA to get to the situation that I can achieve the -15 dB thing...?
Thanks

in AA 1.5 it goes like this:
favorites > edit favorites > New > audition effect (drop down) >amplitude\amplify\fade > edit settings > choose -14db (or whatever) > OK > Name the "favorite" > choose a short cut key (i use the tilde) > save > enjoy _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

I saved that as AA Shortcut Know-How.
Thanks, Todd.
BTW, where's the 'enjoy' key? _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Goodness, aren't you clever. I've never even noticed that favourites thing before. I've just changed the keyboard shortcuts when I needed something, and felt pretty smug at having worked that out.
Thing is though... I'm still not quite there yet... Managed to set it up as a favourite with an amplitude setting to -14 dB but then tried to use it on a whole file, expecting all the breaths to magically disappear, and that doesn't happen, does it? Do you basically use this shortcut on each individual breath, ie you have to highlight it first? I was under the impression that there was a magic program somewhere that involved pressing just the one key and all the breaths somehow disappeared simultaneously. Or am I just deluding myself? (sigh)

i think ... deluding = 'fraid so.
working on mic technique may help a lot, though. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis
