Get to know some of the Creative Directors at the best Ad Agencies in your market. If they like what you do, you may approach them about giving you an introduction. Many many years ago I had one of these fine humans offer to send a personal letter with my demo to about 10 agents in LA - I received three calls and ended up with a very reputable LA Agent.
It's harder today, you really have to have a certain special unique sound that will grab an agent by the ears in order to get repped in the major markets.
The rest of the story is that this particular agent left the agency shortly thereafter and her replacement "discovered" that I didn't actually LIVE in LA (San Diego) and since this was before I had my own studio and ISDN lines, there was really no way to convince him to keep me on. That was in the mid 80's. And shortly thereafter, I took a full time job producing and writing (and doing talent work) for a major defense contractor and my regular VO work pretty much took a hiatus...hard to market when you're working full-time and traveling.
So much time has passed now that I'd need to start that process all over again - put that on my to do list will ya?
