Well, having an opinion doesn't necessarily make them opinionated--in fact, one would hope not. Here's what dictionary.com says about it

Since we're splitting hairs about pre's, compare these samples. A tone separates the two sets of reads.
Which is the 416 into John Hardy into an AudioFire2 and which is the 416 into the MicPort Pro? Which would you choose?

Thanks for the samples George. I produced Beau Weaver's voice for a number of years.
I'd choose the Mic Port Pro, because it's less expensive and portable.
I don't know which sample is the Mic Port, but both sound excellent. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

Does that mean you're option-ated? I'm truly sorry, I just could not possibly resist. |

I'm gonna guess here, and I hope I'm right, otherwise I will have lost love for the Hardy. I'm gonna say the Hardy is the first clip. After listening a few times, the first clip has more girth and substance to it. |

George... I'm not even going to guess... you and Bill Ballenberg have sold me on the MicPort Pro. _________________ Genus |

The second take sounds cleaner and more transparent. _________________ The Blog:

#1 is the MicPort Pro, good ears, Mike and Steve!
Subjectively speaking, I have to say I actually preferred the sound of #1, too, Chuck. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Wow. Agreeing with what Mike said above, #1 sounded a bit more "processed" by the preamp to me than the cleaner #2.
Interesting.

The M processing is rather jagged, the clearest example of this is when Beau says WWJTV, particularly on "TV"- the processing here just falls apart. This was a problem that I ran across with a lot of early USB mics. To me it has distorted, brittle, jagged sound. Where as with the John Hardy, and AF2 has a smoother more refined process. This was something that instantly popped out at me.
I love "analog" distortion because it is more organic or more refined compared to the jittery digital distortion that's happing with the MMP.
The JH and the AF2 combo is clean and transparent. It is this transparency that allowed Beau's chest resonance to carry through even with the 416. To me, this was a more pleasing listening experience, which can translate to a more memorable experience. If the preamp had more color, it would have a warmer more inviting sound.
For fun, I would put Beau on a Gefell MT 71s or a Wunder Audio CM7 FET with GAP-73 ( Neve 1073). These combinations would be classic sonic gold, especially for general announce.
(The Wunder Audio CM7 FET will have a rounder fuller bottom with a nice clean extensive top end exactly like a Neumann U47 FET. The Gefell would have the expressive fullness of a large condenser with the upper "cut through the mix" punch of the 416.)
Simply my unabashed opinion, based upon what I've heard, combined with reasonable deductions and experiences. Coal filtered and then bottled for freshness. _________________ The Blog:

Well I'll tell ya what, with this being the first time I've ever heard the M in action, gotta say I'm impressed by the little fella. |

I've had my micPort Pro for about 3 months. Bought it just for travelling. Now it's the only pre I use. Done several audiobooks and commercials on it. See no reason to stop using it. _________________ Jeff
