ditto.
For too many of my 10 years in radio, I didn't know my brand, but instead tried to be
what I thought a radio guy should sound like. At that time (the 80s)
the concept of "branding" wasn't really front and center, but looking back,
the really successful jocks knew their brand even if it was only at an
unconscious level.
I finally found my "brand" at an AOR station where the format gibed nicely with my basic personna.
The takeaway for me, is kind of like what Connie said---know your limitations.
Not that they should limit you, but by knowing them you can then approach
the script knowing what you can best bring to it, instead of trying to
square peg/round hole yourself into a delivery/style that's not your strong suit.
oh yeah, and not having fun can be a real career-killer too
(whew---out of breath now!)

I think I over-simplified my earlier statement (I was going for dramatic brevity). Of course auditioning will always be there... at all levels. However, I do look forward to when I know I can cover my essentials (eating etc.) without having to compete on a job-by-job basis... a customer base for which I've gone through the audition process already and have a flow of steady work that keeps a roof over my head. I agree with Philip that auditioning for a succession of $200 one-offs is not a good long-term business plan... currently I'll ignore those quite happily unless I like the look of the customer... If I see that it's an established production house or agency, I may well give it a go... not just for that job, but to get on that particular company's radar. A few times I've received a "not for this job, but we'll keep you in mind" ... and they have, and it's turned out to be a non-audition gig worth more than the original... and then another... _________________ Bish a.k.a. I get a chuckle over some of the effusive Facebook posts I occasionally see in which people gush about the cool audition they just did. That's a little like bragging about the great menu you just read, without actually knowing if you'll get to eat the meal. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Love!
Bragging on an audition is goofballs unless it's for something like the movie version of Les Miz. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Re auditioning. It was put into perspective one day when one of my agents told me I was in the top ten for a pretty decent gig. Some of the names that were with me caught my attention. Gary Busey, James Brolin, Ashton Smith, David Kaye...
Daunting? You be the judge. And I didn't book it.
Then there's the gigs you don't expect to get, and... well, I actually voiced a spot running the first break out of the win for the Super Bowl this year. You just never know... _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

I'm making a living full-time reading audiobooks. That's not where I had thought I would be when I started this process; my intent was to work in commercial and animation voiceover.
What you need to find is what works for YOU. In my case, I found that my voice, delivery and capabilities are a perfect match for audiobook work, and that I REALLY enjoy telling a story. It's not where I started or where I had intended to go, but here I am, and loving it.
You need to sell you, not what you think people want. You may find that where you end up isn't where you envisioned being- be open to the possibilities along the way. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

The numero uno reason people fail at voiceover? They give up.
Sure, there could be a million reasons for why they give up. Lack of confidence, lack of ambition, lack of talent, lack of work ethic, lack of courage. But the truth remains, if you stop trying, you'll fail. That's a certainty. _________________ www.juliaknippen.com

What Don said.
Especially this:
