Punch and roll, not to be confused with "tuck and roll" as in a pimped up 1957 convertible:

Ha! Not to worry, Lee...it's likely that you and I are the only two here for whom that "confusion" is even a possibility. _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

Similar to Jeffrey, I shoot for 2 finished hours a day, 3 if it's a tight deadline. That's 4-5 hours of recording, leaving room for auditions and other VO work.
Now...when I work at Brilliance with an engineer and director, I can lay down 5 finished hours in one 6 hour work day - it's a crazy difference. _________________ Adam

And if you're doing audiobooks, you should use software that does. _________________ Jeff

Agreed. My post was mainly for the benefit of anyone who may be lurking or otherwise reading the discussion who may not be aware that not all software can do punch & roll. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

I know Reaper can, Pro Tools and Studio One. I think somebody wrote a script for Twisted Wave to allow it to P and R. Audacity can't and...Wavelab?? Not sure. Ulf is learning Studio One now - but if either Wavelab or Ableton Live can do it- he'd rathe use what he is used to, and he's used both of those in the recent past. |

Somebody also wrote a script for Audition to do it. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

I think someone who does not live in Audition everyday CLAIMED to write a script. I explored the concept a few months back. You have to download a third-part keyboard macro software because the newer Audition does not appear to have or emulate keyboard automation.
For many of us, working in the EDIT view makes Audition appealing. Makes operation SIMPLE. But the best I can figure out is that the best you can do in the EDIT VIEW is an anemic scheme you can call Punch and Roll but doesn't have the capabilities most Punch and Roll folks want. To do that you have to do your work in MULTITRACK VIEW which makes life considerable more complex. (As in exporting files from the DAWS proprietory file formats over to WAV when you are through recording.)
I have come to the assumption that Punch and Roll is not something invented primarily for voice-over folks, but is a long standing technique used in the music recording world. Voice-over folks who learned do-it-yourself/home-studio technical issues from a friend who does musical recordings is likely to be using software other than Audition and has done file conversions all along and don't see that process as an added burden.
All of that said.... I would be thrilled if someone who could point out to me that I am just full of hot air and blowing in the wind and present me with a Punch-and-Roll scheme that would work well in Audition. (EDIT VIEW would be best!)
Punch and Roll in it's best format is non-destructive. You can return to your original mess-up if you like it better than your punched in recording. Or create a second or third Punch and still have your original or your first two tries to pick from. Punch-and-Roll in it's best format should allow you to come back and repair something 10 minutes into a 30 minute book read from yesterday. No scheme I can image for Audition EDIT VIEW works smoothly with the advantages of Punch-and-Roll.
Please. Someone prove me wrong. I would LOVE that. |
