Conny is wonderful! How do you compete against that?

I fancy Ant and Dec (the co-hosts.) I've got a major crush on both those darling lads!

Move over, P.T. Barnum. Simon Cowell is in the house.
OK. I've been teaching voice to opera singers for 30+ years. I know what it is. I won't go into what this Paul Potts performance was all about, here. However, it has been gone into at length in one of my favorite haunts over at www.nfcs.net (New Forum for Classical Singers - off-topic forum, thread = Salesman sings Nessun Dorma on Britain's Got Talent)
OK. Yes. More power to this guy - who has been singing in opera productions since at least 1999. But, what Cowell's people saw is a bit of a schlumpy guy with bad teeth and a "please love me" look. It's all about the spin. (I'm not talking spinning of tones.) And shame (or not) on any of us who continue to want to believe that anything that comes out of any of these idol shows is anything but geared to making $$ for the producers. So, fine. That's business. OK with me.
Anyway, I would think that I'm some evil naysayer - and I "almost" categorized myself thusly - until I read my feelings mirrored over where the other singers/teachers hang out.
It's great that people love Puccini. Who wouldn't? He was the ultimate orchestrator. All those strings and parallel octaves, etc. Brilliant. Nelson Riddle couldn't hold a candle. <g> Nessun Dorma is a guaranteed showstopper. There's a link to some popster singing it on Australian Idol in that same aforementioned thread. It's good to be sentimental. That's important to being human and connected to our inner artist. And P.T. Barnum serves a purpose in this whole mad scheme of life.
A few years ago, a young tenor came to me raving about Russell Watson singing Nessun Dorma. I played Watson for him (because I have to be armed with the current rage). Then, I played Domingo. The tenor simply responded with, "'Nuff said." But if Broadway Boheme and the idol shows bring people to opera (though it has been shown that they only bring people to more of the same and nobody is bumped to a different level of the department store), then, I don't know. Whatever. C'est la vie. _________________ Patricia Shanks

Alright, sorry, maybe not quite so far north. But northeast at any rate, surely? The fellows who interviewed little Conny. |

Ackkk! I've tracked them down to Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Not far enough north.
If I could only find my CD that goes with this book I could take one and call Philip in the morning...

Got it. Thought I'd missed part of an interview with someone. Ant and Dec are the ITV network's big earners ($10million per year at least). Moved from working together as child actors in a drama called Byker Grove and then went on to present kids TV. Do a search for PJ and Duncan.
On Saturday mornings they co-hosted with Cat Deeley ..... What ever happened to her? |

Cat Deeley is currently doing a super job hosting Nigel Lythgoe's "So You Think You Can Dance"-- American Idol for dancers. I believe this is her second season; she replaced someone named Laura Sanchez (if I'm not mistaken) who did season one and was not as strong in the role. I think Cat's just terrific.

I don't think you can compare Opera with Popera really. Watson has an audience as does Bocelli. It's not the same audience that Domingo has, to be sure but at least both audiences are enjoying the music which is after all the crux of it all. Personally, I enjoy them all. I even enjoyed Aretha Franklin's rendition of Nessun Dorma.
EDIT: These three guys are pretty good too. _________________ Joe Rodriguez, Bilingual Voice Actor | The Voiceover Thespian Blog |

I would hardly call Mister Potts' presentation "Popera".
Miss Franklin's song was hard to hear because there was so much noise.
How rude!!! _________________ DBCooperVO.com
