So, I started this thread, and I guess I should report the latest...
I got...2 e-mails back from V123! Ok, sure- they were the same e-mails everyone got...but I was still happy to see a response! After some previous headaches that were never taken care of (many months back), I'm glad to see something come through. I have no complaints with their answers, and will wait this whole thing out.
I'm glad to hear there are folks (talented ones like Moe) getting work that they enjoy. Me? Still nothing...but I never counted on these sites to get me work in the first place, it's all part of marketing...
So, I'm happy for now...until my renewal in December...then we'll see.
But, I thought those that were members of the site would like to know...they did respond! Yay! _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Moe, congrats on the gig!
I'm still waiting to land a gig with SmartCast, but so far, I think I like this system better. Like you said, I know my auds were listened to. There are still leads out there that I am qualified for that I'm not gettng, But, I think the system just needs to work itself out.
Congrats!!!!!!!!!!! _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

So I've been next door and the guests are tossing equipment around, peeing in the rhododendrums and recording and posting flatulence.
It's so nice to drop in on you cultured folk where everyone's having a spot of tea and speaking so civily.
Truly.
As I only just now shouted over there (before being dithered and shown the flanger), there has to be some sort of filtering system.
How to cut submittals down to a respectable (in every sense of the word) number?
SmartCast may not be the answer, but it is at least a response to the question.
I have no complaints. |

That's right!... This is a high class informative Board!... Readers come here to look for quality discussions, not quantity!

No paying gigs yet from SmartCast. However, I did receive my first "Bad" rating.
Thank goodness...they're listening to the auditions! |

I was at a judging session tonight for the MCA-I Media Festival - a preliminary panel - and talked to a producer there who has used V123 in the past. He listened to every one of the demos he used to get with the old system.
He actually has been quite impressed with the auditions and if one simply wasn't right (his example was a young man trying to sound older) he would delete it. More often if the voice wasn't right for this particular project, he would bookmark the talent for another possible project.
If used correctly, a rating system would be fine, but there are so many novice "producers" on the system that there is certainly no way to ensure that their ratings actually mean what V123 thinks they should mean.
I think there are only a couple things that really bother me about the new system so far. The randomization of the selection process (not being invited to do auditions that are clearly what I do) and being discouraged from auditioning. What if my voice style would be perfect for the next 10 jobs that come in (maybe not my particular voice for that particular producer) and the budget is decent and I by some miracle have been asked to audition? If I do audition for them all, then I am graded as an audition hog and punished for it. These are programming issues that will require some complex work.
Other things I don't really like are cosmetic and can be changed quickly. One being that you have to click on each lead that you didn't get to read enough details to agree or disagree with the computer's selection. Even down to what gender. The basics should be visible to us without digging down. I am spending more time investigating leads that didn't "match," than reading and auditioning for the ones that "did."
And I have had a flurry of opportunities to audition in the past few days - except the the matching system really isn't working all that well - a couple asking for a light Asian, then Cambodian and African accented English - or the budgets were simply too low. _________________ Playing for a living...

I agree with everything you said Connie!
I was given a very bad rating on a previous audition. I then looked and saw his average rating for all the auditions received was a '1' star. Doesn't seem quite fair that a producer went through and gave every audition the lowest possible rating!
I had one day with 2 leads with very fair budgets...but the rest haven't matched my profile or my budget...oh well. Less to delete. _________________ Threadjackers local 420

There's a few of those running around Kara, so I wouldn't worry... though the amusing thing is that most of them are clients that I wouldn't work for regardless (several known for late payment, low budget, or adult content). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

So I got back from Long Beach Island late last night to find FIFTEEN SmartCast auditions waiting for me. Some of them didn't match at all but the majority of them were pretty much on-target.
Here's my question: should we rate projects we are invited to that don't match to help refine the SmartCast algorithm? _________________ Tom Dheere - The "H" is Silent, but I'm Not!
