Just doing some prelim research for new gear and wondering who is using a usb audio interface, what model, how is it performing, issues, does it make switchign pc's easier, say from desktop to laptop when on the road, etc?

Mbox from DigiDesign.

Wow. Portable recording studio.

I use it with my G4Tower of Power or my PowerBook-- mostly the PowerBook. I love being able to edit stuff anywhere.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Mbox. I'm using an Edirol UA-5, which works pretty well. With all the different inputs and outputs, I figure I connect just about any two pieces of audio equipment together.

I had an M-box. It's a great investment. You get world class software and a decent hardware interface. I really liked it, but I traded the M-box in and upgraded to a 002-Rack. More inputs and outputs to play with. The 002-R is Firewired.

Has anyone tried the Behringer BAC-2000?

looks like a nifty piece of gear.

We have an Edirol UA-25, and are very happy with it. It is USB 2.0 and self powered. Has two inputs for balanced and unbalanced jacks and two sets of outputs.

I don't know if there are any inherent advantages of firewire/USB. I've read several papers on the comparisons and differences, and when it comes to speed and throughput, there aren't any real advantages of one over the other.

Yep. I've heard good things about the Edirol and, actually, if I would not have begun using the M-box (on advice from a music store I frequent), that definitely is a great way to go. I discovered Edirol's gear when I bought an Edirol keyboard and went to do a warranty registration, online.

When look at the gear I've accumulated in my effort to get into the biz, I suddenly became aware that there was a cheaper and just-as-good way to go. And, the Edirol is def one of the alternatives newbies must consider, I'd say.

For awhile, I was worried about what will happen if my 002-Rack dies, or my computer goes out. I have a Dell 8200 laptop and I'm sure Cool Edit Pro and the Edirol provides all the backup I'll need to keep rolling for a very modest cost.

I had a chance to meet with Uli Behringer 2 years ago, the creator of the Behringer brand. He specifically told me that he was aware of all the "it's so cheap so it can't be anything of quality" comments. He then signed a deal with 2 Chinese manufacturers to assemble his products, with the sole instruction of "beating the competition's specifications". He has his stuff made in the same facility where lots of the all popular Mackie brand is produced. I have been randomly testing Behringer units of all sizes and shapes, but I must admit that their specifications now meet with the best. Am I a fan of the stuff? Well, no. But it definately shifts from an absolute 'no' to a 'some products have my interest'. And for the past year, strangely enough, I've seen Behringer gear popping up in the most expensive studio's in The Netherlands, both in recording and broadcasting. Specifically at places where they'd normally be laughing at you when the name Behringer is mentioned. I was told that at the current sales speed, they're moving about 5000 Behringer units every hour worldwide. Their annual sales figures now exceed $120 million, and almost 45% of that are sales in the USA. It is said Behringer now approaches a 25% marketshare in professional audio gear and musical instrument and accessories worldwide. Kinda... not bad for a former German student playing the piano at school parties Wink

As for the USB interface, I use several... A Yellowtec PUC and besides my main PTHD rigs, an Mbox2 by Digidesign.

I used a Mackie Spike for a couple of years and it worked fine.

But it is an interface/pre-amp/mixer all in one, which in this particular case means that it automatically processes (compression and EQ), whether you want it or not.

However, you can use it as a mixer/interface only by turning down the gain and running an external pre-amp through it, which, I believe, bypasses the default processing...

I use the Alesis MultiMix 8 USB. Not bad. Quality is great. Only complaint is the USB port on the board seems a bit loose.

I also wish the level the PC records at could be higher, but i make those adjustments during editing. (the default level is already as high as it can be)

overall, though, i like USB recording.

Even the Bear Ringer cable tester I have which is great, is great because it is 100% exactly like another cable tester.

I would go so far as to say they largely make pirated goods.

The Alesis Multimix are inconsistent. I know I post house that bought three of them: only one worked properly. I've read of lots of driver issues too. If they work, they're good. If.
