The multiple mics are on seperate channels with different level settings.
The VO might distort the "normal" mic when they get real loud, so they might use the track with the mic set at lower level, maybe with a -20 pad, to avoid distortion.
Sometimes they'll use a second mic about three feet away from the VO for the same reason. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

Too cool, great find Eddie!
Videotaping the recording sessions and using them as a reference and to get ideas for movements is a great idea... is that common in animation? _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

It's been done for a number of years, how many I don't know. I was shown at studios in the 80s that animation has the mannerisms of the voice actors as they read. It probably goes back earlier, but how far I don't know. |

That was a fun clip.
It reminded me of another clip I saw recently, which I just shared on my Twitter feed. (Tweeted? Twitted?)
I simply had to remark on the often hilarious circumstances leading up to the need for (or dare I say art of) selecting the right voice talent. Many of you may have already enjoyed this, but here it is defined via a famous pop culture reference:

I enjoyed the related clip that popped up where James Earl Jones talks about being excited about the money he got for the first Darth Vader performance: $7,000. Fair money in 1976, but I'm guessing pennies compared to the next couple of fees he got for the series.
