Well believe it or not, I have gone through another round of mic purging, and find myself without a travel mic with an out-of town trip looming....this would be for audition purposes only......

any suggestions for something that works well
with less than ideal acoustics, has decent quality---in the , oh, $150 range???, dynamic or condenser?

(Don't everybody laugh at once, please!)

Would be running it most likely through an Apogee Duet, which provides about 70 db of gain....

Considering the issue with room acoustics, I'd suggest sticking with a dynamic mic. The Sennheiser e935 has a good rep, and I've heard good things about the new Blue dynamic mics like the enCORE 200

Hey Rob.
I have and really like the KEL HM2D. It's a small, cool looking condenser, designed to sound like a Shure SM7B/RE-20 type mic.
It doesn't pick up much rumble or room noise, and the high end
is natural and not too bright.

MXl 990 or for about $20.00 the Behringer XM 850 (like an SM58 only cheaper) takes a lickin and keeps on tickin', or the Audio-Technica AT2020 Cardioid Condenser ($99.00) is a workhorse with a beter sound ad frequency range.

Rob,

I use my 416 for traveling all the time. I'm very happy with it.

MKH416 was designed for getting best quality recordings from less than ideal locations.

Personally, I would not want to take such an expensive mic as the 416 while traveling. Sure it'll work great, buy why take the risk of ruining a vacation if you lose or break it?

Mine came with one of those foam windscreens (basically a 2.5" dense foam tube that you slide the mic in) and it's protected it very well. Heck, TV and movie sound people take them to Hell and back partially because they're so durable. Lose it? At $1,000 a pop it always goes carry-on with me.

On the road, I bring a small Pelican case which holds my FastTrackUltra, the SP CS5, and my e935 and a few cables, desktop stand, and a popfilter. Recently I was up North and had to work on a website from my car...the laptop and FastTrackUltra was in the trunk and the e935 was rigged with bungee cords to my driver seat headrest and I sat in the backseat with the script:

Audio-Technica AT2020 (beat to crap & still sounds good) and the trusty micport pro is all i take.

I'm traveling now and brought my Lawson L47 FET. It came in an air-tight case that is virtually indestructible. Of course, I'm carrying it on the plane along with my Macbook and MicPort Pro. It is more sensitive than I like- so I think the 416 is my next purchase in 2010. Still- it's crystal clear while I'm using it with Twisted Wave.

The only bummer is that I can't bring my full camera gear- it's the Nikon and one lens only that fit in my second carry on. Oh- the life of an audio geek Smile

BTW thanks for all the input---I ended up picking up at AT 2020 for travel, and I must say that for the $$$ it is an impressive mic.

What Philip said. Plus the 416 is lightweight, small and easily stowed. TV crews wouldn't have used em as the standard if they didn't deliver on so many levels.
