All my danged invoices are up-to-date.
I'm going to write off two projects from last year, and one from the year before if I can.
2 are from game companies with ideas and not enough capital, so I did the VO ostensibly on spec, and the games didn't pan out.
Another is from a "new client". We agreed on a price via email.
He says they didn't use the audio I sent. The end. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Only one deadbeat for me last year and that was a fellow VO/producer who didn't get paid by his client. I do have a couple of major clients who are seriously in arrears, around 150 days or so, but they've always paid eventually and it's a lot of money so I'm hanging in with them. I've also lost a couple of big clients this past year who've more or less folded due to the economy, so it's market, market, market time!

I still have a few outstanding invoices- but I think they will likely all be paid this month. Only 1 for sure that won't be paid- but I'd honestly do the job again in a heartbeat because I had so much fun! Just don't tell anyone I said that . _________________ Threadjackers local 420

I have a good number outstanding, but my panties aren't in a wad yet. Only about one, and they're looking into it. They don't seem to have a record of the job. _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

i'll put myself in the "lucky" column.
not only did i have just one client conveniently forget to pay me for a job (...but then pad my budget and fees on a subsequent job with a better project... so maybe he didn't forget after all), i had my worries about the new year eased when my year-long production contract with the billy graham association was renewed for 2010. that's 12 months of guaranteed work and reliable checks i can count on, whatever else happens.
my creditors are overjoyed! _________________ rowell gormon

Just made a few collection calls yesterday. Only had to make a few, thank goodness. One said it was probably an oversight... and I'll go with that with the holidays and all. One of my steady ad agencies never pays before 120 days, but does pay. There's two HUGE monthly invoices out on him for holiday ads from November and December. It's steady and as long as the checks come in, I won't complain TOO loudly.
I actually doubled my income from last year. That's 'cause I've really marketed myself over the last year. After all, 2009 was my first year "full time". I've picked up a lot of great advice from folks like you on the VO-BB, and I've picked up better paying gigs. Here's to 2010! WOOHOO! _________________ Chris Ratliff VO's

There are always a few invoices outstanding for me, some more outstanding that others, but they pretty much all get paid eventually. Just got a PayPal deposit this morning for some work I did last September that the client had lost track of. Other client emailed back last night when I reminded him of the past due amount to say he's sending the check today. _________________ Be well,

I have a newbie producer that came into my studio and did a project last February and has been unreachable since march, last week I received a request for audio tracks from some marketing person in NYC who now claims the producer is out of the loop. But she will process the invoice as soon as I send her the audio. The entire project is here all ready to go. So in good faith they will even send a hard drive my way so I can render all 10 hours of audio for the project. And send it off blindly to NYC .
Hey did I tell you today is my birthday, that's right I am ONE DAY OLD !!!!!!
Gotta love it!! |

You don't, really. You just don't claim the income because you didn't get any. But you can't write off the loss as an additional expense. _________________ Jeff

Since we are sort of on topic, is there an accounting program of choice for this business?
Any/all feedback appreciated |

Jeff—
It's uncollectable debt.
I'm gonna tell my accountant about it— I'll let you know what he says. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

It makes sense to me. I'll ask my accountant tonight at yoga...I teach her yoga, she answers my questions and helps to sort out the strange accounting thing. And neither of us has to claim bartering!
Lisa, do a search of the archives because there are several discussions out there. We are all over the place on our choices of software. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

Thanks for this thread! You have reminded absent-minded me that there are four invoices I had forgotten to mail, as well as my 2009 CT Sales Tax return. Oops. Earlier, when I went to mail the current month's bill payents, I discovered last month's cell phone payment stamped and ready to go and still in my sport coat pocket. Now ATT owes me a month of service.
As far as lost revenue goes, one of my clients went out of business last year, fortunately leaving me holding the bag for only one small job. Another client still owes me for two of three jobs I did for them. It's partly my fault because I sent the first invoice to the wrong place and sent the second one without obtaining a purchase order. But I have now been reminded to rattle the producer's chain, so thanks again. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
