I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned previously (unless I missed it), probably because most of you have more going on in your lives than to be planted in front of the TV on New Year's Eve, but between the various "marathons" I flipped the channels as the ball dropped in Times Square and happened upon New Years Rockin' Eve just as Ryan Seacrest tossed it to an off-camera Dick Clark for his commentary. I applaud the world's oldest (81) teenager's valiant effort but it was kind of painful to hear his once booming voice weakened and shaky in the aftermath of his 2004 stroke.
I hope this fate never befalls any of us. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

I spoke with my father-in-law ("accountant to the stars!") about this and he says that although he sounds bad, he's in pretty good health. Still goes to work everyday and has many projects on the stove. _________________ Jeff

I think no one mentioned it because it's not news. It has been like that for years.
I steered clear of the Ryan Seacrest/Dick Clark channel simply because I couldn't bear to hear Mr. Clark. I prefer to keep his fabulous, rock and roll voice in my mind's ear. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I didn't watch Dick Clark's special this New Years Eve...but I usually do and I give him and all associated with the show huge kudos. Granted, his part in the festivities is much smaller than it used to be, for obvious reasons, but he's still there and treated with the same respect he deserves.
As some of you know my dad suffered from Parkinson's disease, he was in advanced 'stage four' when he died last year- which meant that most people had a very hard time understanding what he said, and very few people had the patience to let him do things on his own because everything was a slow and painful to watch process.. His life long friends and even some of his own grandchildren stopped visiting him because 'it was too hard on them'. When I started to care for my dad, I noticed how many people just immediately bypassed my dad and asked me what he wanted to order, or whatever. My heart always lit up when some waitress or nurse took the time to listen to him and treat him like the gentleman he was.
So like everything else in this throw-away- plastic fantastic - phoney as hell culture that we live in- if you ain't top shelf young, purty and rich - be a good little loser and stand in the back where you won't bother the view of the beautiful people.
I wept openly the first time I saw Dick Clark on New Years after his stroke- because he had the strength to allow his weakness to be seen. For many people (especially young people) watching, he's probably the first and only person they've ever seen who's suffered from a stroke.
Although I could take or leave Seacrest - I am so grateful to Dick Clark for gently and bravely reminding us that yes, people do get old and weak and feeble...but that's part of life...no, it ain't pretty, but damn it life seldom is. I for one believe that knowing just how transient and fragile we humans are- makes me appreciate my time here so much more than I would if I thought I were a Highlander and stuck here forever.
Sorry...I'll step of my soap box now and continue my morning. This topic just hit home with me and I needed to vent.

Well said Moe!
One of my favorite moments this past Thanksgiving day was waking up and hearing the care giver ask my grandpa to tell her about coming to Texas in a covered wagon when he was a young boy. It's a story I would ask to hear every time I visited...and he loved telling it. Sure, his stories took longer and longer to unfold the older he got- but they were still just as priceless!
Two weeks after Thanksgiving, my grandpa was gone.
That woman received a beautiful gift- a story she can tell her own grandchildren one day. And all because she took the time to ask. I believe age doesn't diminish the value of what we have to say.
(Moe- Thanks for making room on your soap box for me! ) _________________ Threadjackers local 420

That was well said, Moe. I too cried when I watched Dick Clark a few years ago. _________________ Caryn Clark... The Hip Chick Voice!

Moe,
Good for you and thank you for saying your piece.
My grandfather died of late stage Parkinson's many years ago after a long period of suffering. He was very hard to understand toward the end, but I always went to see him when I was back in Minnesota because he was my grandfather. He taught me to pray the Lord's Prayer. He was my Sunday School teacher when I was a little kid. No amount of illness could take away how precious he was to me. And his life and faith echo on in my own life all these years later. _________________ Be well,

I'm hugging Moe right now!
I caught a few minutes of Dick Clark this NYE and was so impressed that he was out there, where he belongs, and not hiding away. You know, young people will only learn to respect and take the time for older folks if we teach them how. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

I agree with Moe. Dick Clark is not going to let his physical challenges take away from what he enjoys doing. Because of my physical disabilities I've had some interesting experiences with people who don't know me. These people assume I'm older than I am and treat me like I'm a feeble, deaf senior citizen. One sales person started talking loudly and slowly to me once she saw the walker. Boy was she surprised when I rattled off my answer using one of my younger character voices that sound like I'm 20 yrs. old.
BTW no one I've met through this borad has ever done that. |
