|
|
Hi all,
I've raised my head above the parapet on a couple of threads regarding technology issues, but I thought it was about time I introduced myself properly. I'd been lurking for a while before I joined, a little unsure of how it would be playing with the big kids. I've managed to land a couple of gigs now (phone stuff), and have covered my capital expenditure ... well, the mic/preamp anyway
So, now feeling somewhat (just a tad) legitimized in my new endeavour, it's time to push forward and see where it goes. The wealth of knowledge on this board is incredible... and no one's trying to sell me anything!
Me? Well I'm an ex-pat Brit living in New York (Long Island). I've been here over ten years now and plan to stay. I worked for the same tech company for twenty-five years, and walked away a few years back when I decided that corporate bs was killing me. Perfect timing, huh? It didn't take long to realize that I probably wasn't nailing the job market because I had no real enthusiasm to get back on that particular horse.
I've always been an "audio" enthusiast ... I produced a few band demos back in the seventies & eighties, and always had a home studio of sorts back in the UK. I know my way around mixers, signal processors and recording techniques... or maybe I should say that I know enough to know what I don't know (if you see what I mean).
Why am I doing this? I guess there are three reasons...
a) I love audio. Turn the TV off and give me a good radio play any day.
b) For the last ten years I've suffered from the endless comments about how people "love my voice" ... it's the Brit in the US thing ... totally meaningless, but unfortunately, somewhat pervasive.
c) My step-son is an aspiring actor and has managed to get some stage, commercial, soap opera and voice work... and I just love the irony of following in his footsteps
OK, this is far too long... I know I'm meant to bring cake, but I think as everyone is trying to shed the pounds after the holiday food-fest, I'll bring some coffee to wash it down.
Cheers
Peter

Welcome, Peter.
I also began my path toward voice acting as a career being an audiophile from a very young age.
I wish radio plays were anything as popular in the states as they continue to be in the UK. BBC Audiobooks America released a number of titles last September that were formerly exclusive to the UK. Very grateful for that, 'cuz I hate paying for imports to feed my addiction. _________________ Publisher: Voice Actors in the News

Welcome aboard, Bish.
I, too, enjoy good audio performance and production. That television thing... it'll never catch on. _________________ Mike

Thanks for the kind words...
On the comments about radio plays... one of my biggest problems coming over from the UK (apart from the low availability rate of PG Tips, Rich Tea biscuits, lemon curd and Marmite*) was the lack of BBC! The internet is a wonderful thing and I get my BBC fix on a regular basis.
*If I understand the rules properly, Marmite should not be discussed here as it comes under the list of banned subjects... i.e. religion _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Pinto, if by "revival" you mean "repair," then, yes, Marmite can be used to glue a canvas patch onto a tent. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
